Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Ethical tourism is important to us and in a town filled with plastic, dyed glass passed off as crystals, and shells imported from China, we absolutely knew that we needed to visit Ebor to purchase our first piece of Jet.

The staff are well read and travelled and pass this knowledge between themselves to ensure that every customer can make a well informed choice about their purchases.

We didn’t feel pressured into buying anything and my 10 year old daughter was allowed to try on and see things up close before purchasing (treated like a grown up).

Aside from jet, their pieces also feature a range of other ethically sourced stones from around the world, with designs catering for both Princesses and Witches. A real treasure trove, this tiny shoppe felt like stepping back in time, to a museum where you can purchase almost everything on display!

We visited on a wet day. The approach to the museum and art gallery is through a lovely park. The art gallery is quite small but there are some interesting paintings, this is free, the museum charges an admission fee. We enjoyed several hours in this packed museum, there is plenty to see from dinosaur fossils to dolls houses and all manner of things in between! Upstairs, we found a room full of costume through the ages and a video of old Whitby with families, donkeys and Punch and Judy on the beach (v interesting). There is also a cafe (we didn't use it). This is a great place to while away several hours, especially when wet and your admission can be reused for 12 months if you keep your receipt. Recommended.

So much to see and wonderful colour. The artist was lovely, very friendly but put no pressure on us to buy. The problem was narrowing down the list of what we would have liked to buy! My adult daughter has limited mobility but Ailsa made it easy for us to get close to the gallery which was great as we had looked forward to the visit but thought we might be disappointed when we first saw where it was. Such gorgeous pieces, it would have been a shame to miss this place. We each bought two items which continue to give us joy.

A phenomenal recommendation to Fortune’s to try their delicious smoked kippers. They are fantastic sized kippers with an amazing smokey taste.

Situated just beyond the 199 steps, Fortune’s really is the heart of Whitby with its fantastic produce and friendly service. Over a couple of days I also purchased their smoked salmon (which was amazing, best smoked salmon I’ve had), their kipper pate and their smoked bacon which again had this delicious smoked taste and flavour to it.

Wonderful shop. However, I was given a framed A1 picture of the Whitby Whale bones as a gift, this was purchased mail order. When it arrived, it wasn't quite set right and there was a slight tear in the back of the print. Gemma was fantastic, a replacement was sent which arrived yesterday. Having lived in Whitby as a child this print brought back many memories and the customer service and friendly attitude of Gemma brought even more so of the people of Yorkshire themselves. Cannot recommend enough. You will NOT be disappointed.

Called in here on a wet and windy day after seeing it on the BBC Antiques Road Trip programme. It is near the harbour front but difficult to park near. It has lots of cabinets with material from different dealers. The quality of the things on sale and the way in which they are displayed varies greatly. The majority is less than 100 years old - there are relatively few actual antiques. Worth a look but I saved my money for an auction the next day.

Small beer and bottle house near the swing bridge in Whitby, choice of 8 draught beers, not necessarily well known but that’s part of the charm for us. There is also a very comprehensive selection of whisky, about 50 I think. Bottled and canned beer can also be bought off the shelves to drink in or take home. Does not open on an evening as it is actually quite small in area. If you like proper beer and a step back in time atmosphere it is well worth a lunchtime/afternoon visit.

Justins has always been a part of my trips to Whitby and the chocolate is amazing! We had to make 2 trips to the shop in out holiday as we'd already eaten all of the chocolate that we were supposed to take home with us! The cinder bar is our favourite and we're gutted we can't buy it online, but it's something to look forward to on our next trip :)
