Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- FinediningAmberSalisbury, UK190 contributionsWe were lucky enough to see a play "Midsummer Nights Dream" (performed by a local company) at this quaint and pretty little 18th century church. This church has one of the best examples of boxed pews which would have been used by the families who worshipped here. Therefore, it was a rather unique and unusual setting for a Shakespeare play but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. The play was jolly good too!!Written 9 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Mezzar12Australia786 contributionsVery glad we made the effort. The views from the very top and the walkway half way up are spectacular. Our youngest has just turned 8 which is the minimum age to do the climb. It’s 270 winding, narrow steps broken up with a narrow walkway at the 100 step mark. The stairs themselves weren’t an issue for us as we’re fairly active and those in front set a pretty steady pace, people who don’t like tight spaces might struggle as there are a few very narrow areas and once you’re going there’s really no way out but up!Written 21 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - John MLyon, France2,062 contributionsSt Michael le Belfrey on High Petergate is a living everyday church, as the largest parish church in York, but only open to the public at certain times. We got there on a Sunday afternoon, when it was almost empty and quite dark. The architecture is referred to as “Perpendicular gothic”, visible on the straight vertical lines of the central pillars, and the windows. The lantern tower is also perpendicular, built along Victorian lines when fires were lit in the tower Fires were lit in the tower as there were no streetlights to guide people in the absence of streetlights. The inside canbe rather gloomy, especially on a wet day, but the pulpit has been renovated and the lectern has a trademark mouse on its plinth, with an area for the musicians on a stage nearby.
On the right of the church is the Guy Fawkes Pub, who is supposed to have been who was baptised there on the 16th of April in 1570, before he became a Roman Catholic and tried to blow up Parliament in 1605. St Michael le Belfrey has replaced a church dating back to 1294 and is sited near to the place where the Emperor Constantine was proclaimed Roman Emperor in 306 AD. So, lots of history to consider in this area and worth a visit.Written 19 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Margaret sorted an horrific death as a consequence.
It’s been a while since I have popped in here and there has been a lot done to it in recent years, worth a visit whilst passing through The Shambles.Written 31 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - FyingKiwiChristchurch, New Zealand1,132 contributionsTucked away on the edge of the museum gardens is this little gem full of history. Visually it has considerable appeal, including stained glass windows, which can clearly be added to when the occasion arises. It also has a wonderful old stone wall.Written 27 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Neil KLiverpool, UK829,468 contributionsSt Martins Church is a wonderful historic church in the historic city centre that's just a joy to behold.
The most notable feature about this church is the evocative stone tower ,this medieval church is certainly eye catching ,I love the look of the building,so photogenic ,there's also a really good clock protruding from the church which looks amazing, all in all a great church to check out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Coney Street.Written 1 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. A fine looking church, one of the most historic in York, parts of this church date from the 11th century but it's mostly 15th century architecture we see today,I love the evocative stone tower ,so beautiful ,buried in the grounds of St Mary's Church in an unmarked grave is notorious highwayman John Nevison,it's a wonderful church to check out if you're in the area and easy to locate along Bishophill Junior .Written 5 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Neil KLiverpool, UK829,468 contributionsOn a freezing cold night my twin brother Stephen and I were pub hopping down Micklegate when we passed this beautiful church that looked really impressive.
A wonderful example of Victorian architure at it's best ,a Grade II listed church building, there's a grandness to this church building, the facade is so photogenic ,it's most definitely one of the finest buildings down Micklegate with the exception of Micklegate Bar,I took a few photos before moving onto the pub across the road namely The Nags Head Pub ,a beautiful church,if you're in the area well worth seeking out.Written 20 March 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I chanced upon Calvary Church as I was wandered around this part of York,a beautiful brick building, to me it looked like a huge stabling building but on closer examinations it became clear it was a place of worship, the brickwork is exquisite, looks awesome, cant comment on the interior, never entered but I was suitably impressed with this building to take a few photos before moving on.
Easy to locate along Barbican Street, most definitely well worth checking out if your in the area.Written 17 November 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
