Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Have recently returned from my third visit in a year.

First time was with with my mother and sans dog (think I did a seperate review for that trip) second time with husband and dog and third time with sister and dogs.

As we had the dogs I was unable to go inside the house on my 2nd and 3rd visits, which was fine as all seen earlier in the year.

The great thing about Castle Howard is you can get a gardens only ticket which is amazing, and every inch of the grounds is worth exploring - and we did. You can also take the dogs into every cafe and shop. We love the courtyard cafe, it does the best eggs royale and coffee.

We also got to experience the bettys pop up shop, which was ok but not as great as I had hoped. It did make me want to return to Harlow Carr asap though for the bettys cafe!

Highly, highly recommended. Long term we are planning to move to the area, so would consider membership.

Can’t wait to return in 2025.

Brilliant tour! Our tour guide Jake was incredible and really informed on the bunker, can tell he has a genuine interest in the bunker and it's history. Made the tour so much better, an incredible place to visit

This was our first visit so we didn't know what to expect. The main thing we noticed was how friendly, informative and passionate all the guides were. There wasn't a tour on during our visit as we went at the time the Christmas decorations were there but still learned a lot about the hall and the former owner. We will come back again next time we are in York.

The cafe looked nice and there is a small second-hand bookshop. It is a pity that visitors can no longer access the cellars where the Roman ghosts were seen but perhaps they will open them again one day. Thank you for a lovely visit!

While not a great deal to read once inside, what there is is very informative. The staff are very firendly too. You get a good view from up the top, but be aware, there are a lot and I mean a lot of stairs! Not only to get in, but once inside too and as some are original brickwork, some of it is uneaven too, but there are plenty of hand rails etc.

Try and visit on a warm and dry day becasue even inside, it's very wet and slippery when it's raining and can be very cold and blowy up top.

We were lucky enough to see a play "Midsummer Nights Dream" (performed by a local company) at this quaint and pretty little 18th century church. This church has one of the best examples of boxed pews which would have been used by the families who worshipped here. Therefore, it was a rather unique and unusual setting for a Shakespeare play but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. The play was jolly good too!!

We booked tickets for the Haunting of Hudson Halloween event and it was so good! From the get go we were greeted by the staff, all well informed, we got a welcome punch drink, and got taught how to do some waltz dances! It was a lovely evening. Kudos to the staff!

We have never visited before as we live in the other side of York and there is no parking except for disabled people. However we had a family member visiting who has a blue badge so off we went. The garden is lovely and passable with care for a person using a walking stick. The toilet facilities are poor; one wc for everyone and the baby change facility is in there too.Not good. The refreshments are served in China cups but the
Servery is awkward to access. The terrace is lovely but only some of the tables had parasol and it was a very hot day, so not suitable for long. So much more could have been done to tell the story of the Terry family and their part in the chocolate story of york. Really it could have been anyone's house and garden except for one family portrait in the hall. I think the National Trust could do better.

Stayed at The Roman Bath for one night. The Roman Bath is in the heart of York, so an Ideal location. The room was tired and may need a revamp but we liked it, was clean and comfy and we would stay again. We stayed a Wednesday night so probably not a right lot of party goers out. Karaoke in the Roman Bath was on until 11:00pm. Early in the morning it is very noisy in the area, metal clattering noises, market traders setting up etc. Didn't bother us but may put others off if they are after a peaceful night and a lay-in. Nice staff. Let us store out luggage there before check in and after checkout.

We attended a drinks and dinner event at this wonderful medieval venue.

The ground floor features stone pillars and large windows and looks very monastic, while the first floor is Tudor-style timber and plaster with soaring wooden beams. A wood staircase from the lobby/bar area connects the two floors indoors.

The building is in a very lovely setting surrounded by the York Museum Gardens, with the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey a short walk away.

It was very atmospheric and entirely appropriate for our medieval history society event. It made for a memorable evening.

Really worth a short stop as you walk around the city . Well preserved section of the old city walls and this key gate ( bar) . Nice way to enter through and get a brilliant view of the minster just 2 mins walk away. Decent old style pub under the Bootham bar as well ( the fat badger).

Excellent hour or two exploring this old abbey in a very peaceful setting. We got the comprehensive guidebook which provided added interest. Lots of opportunities for photos.

St Crux Parish Hall is located at the end of The Shambles and is a nicely maintained old church. It is worth checking out if you like historic buildings and very much in keeping with the area.
