Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Eric S83 contributionsFirstly we were never informed that one exhibitiin Hall is closed whish was disappointing. The museum is half the size it should be but the same admission price.
Secondly the Flying Scotsman VR experience is good but not worth the £7 extra for a few minutes. And Why just Why has the VR made Sir Nigel Gresley a black guy when he was born in Edinburgh and as white as a mothers pride loaf. Absolute nonsenseWritten 2 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The giant oak beams in the undercroft and great hall are stunning. Some interesting quirky artefacts too like a statue of Napoleon that had stood outside York shops for decades and a wooden documents trunk dating back to the 1300s. The prints of old York are interesting. I also liked the way you could see how sash windows had been added in Georgian times and old stones reused in the original walls (they were recycling even way back when!).Written 23 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - judi53Leeds60 contributionsWe already loved this house and looked forward to seeing it in its Christmas decor. We were not disappointed. It was absolutely delightful. As 2 persons of a certain age, we still thoroughly enjoyed finding the mice and working out who was the culprit! The staff were lovely! So enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I'd definitely recommend a visit. We intend to return next Christmas, as well as in-between!Written 3 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - DollyD11 contributionsThe museum is in gorgeous gardens, Which when we visited had a display of Ghost Sculptures which was really atmospheric and nice. The museum itself is intersting, Exhibits on Starr Carr and Roman York. Lots to see and nice to look around. Discount for those on Universal Credit.Written 11 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Hayley ELondon, UK21 contributionsI went to the adults only tour at 4pm after asking a viking at the Jorvik centre if DiG was only for kids.
I was the only person booked onto this tour so had a great chat with my guide (John? I'm really bad with names) - he was super patient with me and my diversions and there was time to go 'digging' in the pits. Was a fabulous evening and highly recommend the 4pm tour for adults wanting a mix of learning and playing in the pits 😄Written 18 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. From the get go we were greeted by the staff, all well informed, we got a welcome punch drink, and got taught how to do some waltz dances! It was a lovely evening. Kudos to the staff!Written 5 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- MadMac66Fullerton, CA128 contributionsMy wife and I visited Barley Hall in September 2024. It was an afterthought, having bought tickets to the Jorvik Viking museum, this was a small additional fee. But it was worth it. Not a long visit, probably an hour or so. There are several rooms to explore, each with laminated info cards to pick up and read the history and purpose. Interactive games for kids learning too.
Along with the Jorvik museum, this gave us a really good insight to medieval life in York. It makes sense to get the package, even though we did not have time to visit the other 2 attractions in the package.
Finding the Hall was an adventure in itself, tucked away down a narrow lane, under an archway into a courtyard. We were there on a weekday, at the end of the day, and it was not busy. We were able to take our time and enjoy the exhibit.Written 11 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. They also had outfits you could try on, me and my husband enjoyed this a lot, we were like big kids!
Would 100% recommend brilliant price for what you get!Written 5 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The room was tired and may need a revamp but we liked it, was clean and comfy and we would stay again. We stayed a Wednesday night so probably not a right lot of party goers out. Karaoke in the Roman Bath was on until 11:00pm. Early in the morning it is very noisy in the area, metal clattering noises, market traders setting up etc. Didn't bother us but may put others off if they are after a peaceful night and a lay-in. Nice staff. Let us store out luggage there before check in and after checkout.Written 20 June 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Clean and cosy accommodation steeped in history. Very interesting museum about the property worth visiting during stay.

Each of its four levels were themselves individual forts.Written 27 April 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Stuart WPortsmouth, UK25 contributionsGreat outdoor family attraction.
Love visiting here for the historical reproduction areas and the railway!
On our visit list when visiting friends that live in the area.
Make sure you check out the Yorkshire Barn cafe too the food is amazing.
If you want to ride the train, make sure you visit on a Sunday or bank holiday as these are the only running days.
My son loves the play area and the peddle ride on tractors!Written 22 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - amdgriggsSheffield, UK1,692 contributionsThe centre is located in the old parish church of St James. When the church was at risk of demolition after being declared surplus to requirements it was taken over by a local heritage society. The old church is a really impressive building reflecting the wealthy families who once lived at the now demolished Warter Priory - which must have been stunning in its prime. The graves and memorials to these wealthy individuals are located in the churchyard and inside.
There are a number of information boards dotted around the churchyard about the history of the village, about chalk grassland ecology and also explaining the earthworks to the north of the site that mark the site of the ancient Priory. Inside the church porch there are lots of leaflets, some of which describe walks in the local area. The building still feels like a church and is full of pews. Around the walls are more information panels which give details of Yorkshire Wolds life and heritage and describe the history of the Warter Estate. There are lots of folders too, some containing details of the local farms with pictures of farm life in the past, and one folder also contained wedding photos from weddings that had taken place in the church. And some of the finest features are some striking stained glass, both in the old church windows and also two huge almost semi-circular displays which are mounted semi-portably in the centre of the church: turn on the lights, as you're invited to, and then look at the leaflets which are helpfully lying next to the stained glass and start to realise how unusual such glass is, with its partly non-religious imagery.
A fascinating place, and also good for reading and quiet contemplation.Written 7 July 2016This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
