Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Jade B5 contributionsRecently attended one of the centre's Evening Owl & Bird of Prey Encounters and had a brilliant time. On arrival we immediately were able to handle some beautiful birds, the staff were all so friendly and knowledgable and there is real love and care here for all of their birds.
The night was well organised with the large group split into two parties, with a break for hot food and a drink from about an hour in. Food was simple toastie, hotdog, panini but was lovely and very welcomed on such a cold February evening and the hot chocolate was absolutely delicious!
We ended the night with an outdoor flying show, where we were able to watch some beautiful night birds fly over our heads. I was also able to play a part and have a small bird fly to me to perch on my arm which was great.
It is my understanding that the team are moving the centre shortly, and I for one will be showing my support and visiting the new premises once it's all up and running. I wish everyone the best of luck with the move!
My only note for anyone visiting the first time is that parking can be difficult if you drive up to the centre entrance, I found this tricky in the dark and difficult to get back out of a narrow road with many other vehicles also parked. Maybe park at the neighbouring hotel if you can, or just outside of that area and walk in.Written 13 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We finally got round to visiting and it was really interesting. The 2 staff/volunteers (one was Jake) who greeted us and showed us around were very informative and made the tour interesting. The tour is just under an hour including a 10 min video and a walk around some of the rooms which are as left when it closed in 1991.
We couldn’t find any parking info on the English Heritage website so we parked in Morrisons for free and walked 5 mins down the road via Blue Bird bakery!
Its not an accessible site as there are stairs up to the bunker and inside.
Highly recommend paying a visit if your local or visiting Clifford’s Tower there are plenty of buses to Acomb or a walk from town. Holgate windmill is also close!Written 9 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Sonja MHove, UK733 contributionsA wonderful view into the history of the city and its inhabitants. The tour guides really bring the history of the building to life.Written 29 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - dmaccallum63London, UK696 contributionsWe had an interesting morning visiting this exceptional Georgian home with very knowledgeable staff and beautiful furniture and decoration. Much of the furniture was bequeathed as a collection by the Terry family of chocolate fame.Written 11 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Janet JBedford, UK322 contributionsKnew nothing about these gardens but boy were they worth a visit! We had an excellent few hours there,so much to see and such a wonderful variety of shrubs and flowers, colours were amazing and of course they attracted many bees and butterflies. - Brian NLeeds, UK2 contributionsReally enjoyable afternoon - wines were so nice we actually bought a few bottles (which we don’t usually do on vineyard tours). The owners enthusiasm is very clear for all to see and they make sure everybody can enjoy the wine in their own way. Well worth a visit!Written 27 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- FinediningAmberSalisbury, UK192 contributionsWe were lucky enough to see a play "Midsummer Nights Dream" (performed by a local company) at this quaint and pretty little 18th century church. This church has one of the best examples of boxed pews which would have been used by the families who worshipped here. Therefore, it was a rather unique and unusual setting for a Shakespeare play but a very worthwhile and enjoyable experience. The play was jolly good too!!Written 9 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- JeffNNNSt Helens, UK138 contributionsThis was our second visit and we found it really interesting, particularly as we're all military historians.
The displays tell the story of the various local Regiments in a way that will provide something whether you already know a lot or not.
Not sure if there is a lot for kids, hope somebody from Museum will comment on that.
Shop has a good range of merchandise as well.Written 18 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - JeffNNNSt Helens, UK138 contributionsWe happened on this place wandering around on our annual visit to York in 2024 but it was about to close.
This year we made it after bit of a search, not being able to remember name!
It was worth the effort, we all found it really interesting, telling the story well. We kept on losing each other as we got distracted by various things, such as the different games and displays.
There looked to be a fair few things for kids to do as well.Written 18 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. However we had a family member visiting who has a blue badge so off we went. The garden is lovely and passable with care for a person using a walking stick. The toilet facilities are poor; one wc for everyone and the baby change facility is in there too.Not good. The refreshments are served in China cups but the
Servery is awkward to access. The terrace is lovely but only some of the tables had parasol and it was a very hot day, so not suitable for long. So much more could have been done to tell the story of the Terry family and their part in the chocolate story of york. Really it could have been anyone's house and garden except for one family portrait in the hall. I think the National Trust could do better.Written 14 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Really interesting to learn the history of the building and it's founders.Written 17 February 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Ron86Stoke48 contributionsA great 90mins to get close to adorable animals.
Would be even better if you could have the opportunity to handle a couple of the animals. Otherwise this is a great place to see otters, racoons and a few other animals that you don’t often see up close. Really good and great for toddlers up to adultsWritten 11 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
