Such a serene and beautiful church and graveyard - and the CS Lewis connection makes it historic and iconic.
Be sure to see the Narnia window inside the church next to the pew he always sat in. His faith and books about faith have impacted many lives.
The graveyard is a walk into the past…beautiful headstones and flowers and trees. If you haven’t been to visit his house it is located nearby.

Splendid piece of Victorian gothic architecture that could easily just be driven past. Looking down from the third floor of the Randolph hotel gives it a whole new perspective.

    Another powerful portrayal by Antony.

Actually about 7 feet in height it looks significantly more diminutive given its elevation. It evokes many emotions ranging from being resentful at the constant observation by him to sympathy for a forlorn abandoned figure.

As with all these figures it is based on a mold of the artist’s body. Apparently some people noticing it at night have rang emergency services thinking it is a live person contemplating imminent oblivion.

Surrounded by verdant flora, it’s easy to miss the Plaque. But having persevered we spotted it.

Referring to an edifice dating from the 1100s and long gone, it is a reminder of changing histories.

After escaping mortal danger in 1314 Edward II gave the Palace to the Carmelites in gratitude. During the Reformation it was dismantled and interestingly materials from it were used in building a couple of the University Colleges.

The wall notice encapsulates all of these events.

In pleasant Bonn Sq stands the city’s first War Memorial. It honours the Oxfordshire Light Infantry forces who fell in the Tirah campaign of the late 1890s.

An obelisk that is 25 feet high, it contains a list of names and an exhortation of tribute.

Unveiled in 1900 it was designed by Indigo Thomas.

Two stacks of books symbolise friendship ties between the two university cities of Bonn and Oxford, as evidenced by their twinning for over 70 years.

Known colloquially as Books, its formal title is Knowledge and Understanding. These words plus trust and friendship are inscribed in English on one stack and in German on the other.

Continuing the theme, books in bronze are additionally placed on benches in the Square so that the public can fully experience them.

A gift from Bonn to Oxford, it was unveiled in 2009 and created by the prolific Diana Bell.

On the wall across from the Methodist Church is this tribute plaque.

Honouring John Wesley, founder of Methodism, it points out that in 1783 he preached a number of times in the locality.

It’s a marvellous portrayal of a powerful creature. Large with tail extended it resonates with the city’s name.

Opposite the train station, it was commissioned by the Said Business School to celebrate the opening of their building in 2001.

Created by Olivia Musgrave it was unveiled in 2002.

Not far from the Castle is this striking creation by Alan Wilson. A mix of materials is used including steel and bronze.

Rising over 7.5 metres it resonates with ancient obelisks. Given the modern composition it’s a colourful edifice, enhanced by the strong sunlight.

Albeit Alexander Fleming serendipitously discovered penicillin in 1928 at his London laboratory but medical research central to its isolation and use in humans was performed in Oxford.

To mark this pioneering work two plaques were unveiled in Oxford in 2018. This is one.

It seems as though Boyle was fortunate to be included in the plaque at all, as the first suggestion from the then Sherardian Professor of Botany included reference to only Robert Hooke. It is surmised that as a Botanist the Professor may have been focused more on microscopes and cells than gases.

After much consideration the University decided on the plaque we see today, honouring the two eminent scientists. It was unveiled in 1964.

Paradise Garden is a lovely tranquil stretch near the major Westgate Centre. Dating from around 2017 it is the work of William Cobbing.

A series of seven monumental stone boulders stand upright. Inset in each are depictions of herbal plants once grown in the locality.

The artwork also resonates with the rich history and archaeology of the area of Greyfriars Place, including the Franciscan Monastery that was here for centuries. It gave its name to the pleasant space.

Over the past half-century much archaeological excavations and research have uncovered valuable knowledge and a broad range of artefacts.

An interesting series of metal sculptures by the artist By Jon Mills. In at least two locations near each other, with one at the side of the small bridge over the Castle Mill Stream.

They show metal railings containing flocks of swallows in flight. The one at the bridge also has foliage in metal.

    They date from 2009.

Close to Magdalen College School that Noel attended at the age of 13 is this honour that celebrates his short life.

He later graduated from Trinity College Oxford with a First in Medicine. He also found time to develop his athletic skills and represented his country in the 1908 Olympics.

During the dreadful WW I he received two V.C. One posthumously after his death at the front in 1917.

    In 2005 Noel’s great-niece and great-nephew unveiled this Plaque.

Inaugurated in 1921 it was the first war memorial in the city. It comprises a number of steps, an octagonal plinth and a high cross.

It was first to honour the fallen of WW I, on the topmost step. Subsequently WW II victims were in tribute on the next step. A further commemoration script in on the fourth step down.
