Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- markitikiOrlando, FL684 contributionsThe way up is not too steep but can get strenuous at times. Path is well beaten, but will get muddy on rainy days. No trash or facilities so make sure you stock up before and pack your trash out. Views at the very top are incredible and well worth the hike. We took the more challenging route down the back which is a steep descent, but doable if you are physically able. From there, the walk back was through the moor and very pleasant.Written 4 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - markitikiOrlando, FL684 contributionsI truly felt like we were back in the old days, Old Town felt very authentic and there are loads of pubs and restaurants serving local food and drinks. Architecture was breathtaking at times. Walking is very easy but does get busy with other visitors during peak times.Written 4 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lynne AMelbourne, Australia94 contributionsEdinburgh is a very busy city with a lot of one way streets if driving within the centre of town, walking within the old town limited is recommended, or take the hop on hop off sightseeing bus which is ideal.
The Royal mile is well worth the walk up the hill to the Castle from Holyrood Palace, but I suggest you should walk down hill from the Edinburgh Castle and take in the sights of the many quaint shops and Churches within the street. The street is cobblestone so wear suitable shoes.Written 5 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I learned more about Scotch and its history and distilling process than any prior tour! Could not be more happy with this experience.Written 31 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- markitikiOrlando, FL684 contributionsCute little park that offers great views, bested only by Arthur's Seat. Paths are well established and easy, with a few steps throughout. We did not visit the restaurant, but that is an option if you have time.Written 4 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - john6101953Dudley, UK391 contributionsWe have wanted to go to the Tattoo for a long time and finally decided to go, we were not disappointed.
The most amazing experience is a great setting
All those taking part were excellent and the complete show was brilliant
The only negative was the items being sold before the Tattoo started, they were extortionate prices, for example a cagoule that would coast £4/5 was £15
The programmes however were well priced at £10 and are excellent quality
A great experience that will never be forgottenWritten 27 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - paulYork, UK17 contributionsThe best tour of our whole weekend. Alex was our guide and was excellent - clearly very knowledgeable and able to bring the history of this beautiful place to life. Some of the historical facts can be a bit overwhelming but important to understand how the building, the city, the country and its people were impacted by events. And definitely some lighter moments!Written 6 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Preeti VermaPoland393 contributionsBeautiful place to explore in Edinburgh.
Need to walk to get into this place after getting off from public transport which is well connected.Written 27 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. So it’s a must see for anyone visiting Edinburgh who is interested in art.
I particularly enjoyed the temporary exhibition of paintings by Sir John Lavery. This exhibition charges an admission fee. This results in the exhibition being less crowded than the main galleries, which is an advantage.Written 23 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - n2historySaint Louis, MO626 contributionsWe joined an HES (Historic Environment Scotland) guided walk of the park and had a fabulous time. The guide was courteous and knowledgeable. He made the trip enjoyable and ensured that everyone was doing well. We would love to have gone on some of the other guided walks in the park, although time did not allow. So glad we got out into nature after traipsing around the city for two days.Written 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Brian E37 contributionsThe interior design of this museum is almost as much of a draw as the actual portraits. It is only appropriate that it house so much of Scotland's history. The gallery features a mix of historical as well as contemporary works of art. I chose to spend most of my time in the galleries housing the older portraits as it brought to life these writers, explorers, and political luminaries whose names I knew but whose visages I didn't. This is not a particularly large museum, but I would allot a good amount of time for it if you are someone who appreciates history being brought to life.Written 18 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - AQ410Scotland, UK178 contributionsI've been to Hopetoun House many years ago....ironically, I really only remembered the library and study from that visit. So here's a wee review from this visit. PLEASE NOTE ,HOPETOUN IS SEASONAL AND NOT OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND. CHECK OPENING BEFORE YOU GO.
ACCESS:-
Hopetoun is well signposted from the major routes. Take note though, you do go through a housing estate and alongside the waters edge to reach Hopetoun.
ENTERING THE GROUNDS:-
You'll be greeted by a lovely person at the ticket booth as you go into the grounds.
CAR PARKING:-
Surprisingly, the car park is fairly small. Maybe there might be other places for parking when it is busy. I did not see blue badge parking, but that said,I never asked either. Car park is free though unless it is for an event.
THE HOUSE:-
Absolutely stunning. The family still live in the house (in one wing). I noticed threaded throughout the house, there was family pictures which is lovely to see. Just truly depicts that first and foremost this house is a family home.
Well worth seeing.
I was there at the Outlander Tour event which was great. Our guide Fiona was so knowledgeable about the house and shared information on its history as well as the house involvement in Outlander . Please note that there are steps to get into the house and it is on different levels- there is no lifts that I certainly seen.
TOP TIP:- Highly recommend going to the viewing platform to get beautiful views of the Forth and beyond.
ANOTHER TOP TIP:- If you're an Outlander fan- nip along the road to Midhope Castle to visit. It's on the Hopetoun Estate ,but it's a wee walk away.
THE STABLES KITCHEN:-
It's absolutely beautiful inside. The staff were so lovely- by far the kitchens greatest asset.
I personally found the food to be quite expensive though. Don't get me wrong the cakes were lovely but I was quite disappointed to find out that what I wanted for lunch had run out (I was there just after 1pm). So I ended up getting loaded jacket potato(cheese, leek and mushroom) with side salad (mixed lettuce leaves -no tomatoes etc) -£11. There was 2 loaded jackets on the plate. I didn't eat much of the salad. Personally, I would charge half the price and give half the portion - or at least offer that as an option for those with a smaller appetite.
Would I return to Hopetoun House:- Absolutely yes.......all the staff I spoke to were lovely, definitely an assett to the House.Written 21 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
