Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- EstellePorthcawlPorthcawl, UK147 contributionsAn excellent visit here on 29.11.
It was a calm, clear, cold, 2c day.
Lovely staff throughout the whole time there.
Great visitor's shop, picked up a few, lovely momentous from our visit.
Really interesting place, full of history.
Use the audio guide, provided, for more information.
Fantastic views over the Moray Firth, on the 29th, the Firth was calm and peaceful. Wonderful views in the distance of the snow capped Caithness and Sutherland mountains.
We stopped for lunch in the cafe, see separate review, excellent refreshments.
Lentil soup and fresh bread, butter and a good selection of cakes. The highlight of the visit was the museum, which was so interesting, packed with memorabilia and the biggest collection of medals I have ever seen. The curator was incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, offering us information that we had not even thought about. I wish we could have stayed longer !
There are a selection of things for children to do there too, colouring , games to play, jigsaws etc.
I thoroughly recommend this attraction.Written 29 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Michael H5 contributionsWe are fortunate to have made this trip twice, in terms of wilderness, wildlife and views the West coast to the North is definitely the best part, second time around we travelled from fort William to Durness and included the Isle of Skye (which you can traverse in a van easily in two days and see everything plus do a bit of hiking) our main stops were Arisaig, Skye, Applecross, Shieldaig, Achmelvich and Durness, all very isolated and beautiful. We saw plenty of wildlife including otters, deer, seals, marine birds and birds of prey and met friendly travellers and locals along the way. It’s a very peaceful, reflective and restorative experience. 10 days is more than enough, in that time we fitted in 6 decent hikes and climbs.
The weather is extreme at times so ensure you have supplies and appropriate clothing, you will need to take some food supplies as there is sparse provision on the route bar the honey pots. We did find that the NC500 food stop wagons were not all that and were overpriced. The driving is one track in places for long miles and please offer courtesy when driving in a van by stopping to allow people to pass. Additionally think about where you’re parking. Areas would not be suitable to for large vehicles and or inexperienced drivers, you need to research this before planning your route.
There is ample provision for vans and motorhomes to fill with water and deposit waste, we went off peak season and even though the provision is there we did see evidence of people dumping their waste which is awful, I can imagine how much worse this can be in peak season and how poor behaviours and influx makes local residents feel. Subsequently, we felt off vibes from locals a couple of times which was a shame.
We stayed on sites during our trip and our favourites were Shieldaig and Sango sands. Lovely facilities and hot showers with fair prices. Plenty of opportunities to support local communities at farm and craft shops etc.
I would recommend going out of season, we have never been in peak season and can imagine it could be unpleasant with an influx of travellers on roads and sites, but each to their own.
Bring board games etc and books as there will be rainy days!Written 30 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Both born and raised in highland. We felt warm welcomed especially this was our very first trip to Scotland. Dad couldn't get his eye off from the nature beauty, the cow (yes, the cow), the lake. I got to try on opening the water gate of the canal. We spent a good amount time in the Highlanders museum, which full of history and lots of display to see. Off course, much needed hot chocolate.
We went to the Clava Cairns and Culloden battlefield in the afternoon before returning. I was amazed to learn the ancient settlement and the Jacobite history.
If you are first timer,I definitely recommend this tour. it covers all highlights around Inverness and could not be missed.Written 9 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The main purpose for my visit was to view the art whilst in the city. Barbara Rae "Times and Places" was again beautifully displayed and a pleasure to engage with.Written 10 January 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Love this place, the indoor planting areas are so relaxing. I'd love something like this to spend hours relaxing in with a nice glass of wine, looking at the plants and listening to the water. Amazing place, easy to find and big car park which isn't extortiante with its charges.
Cafe is good with plenty of places to eat - indoors, in the glass house or outside with the cheeky local birds that clear up your crumbs. Fabulous place to visit at different times of the year to see how the plants change at different times of year. Free entry, but there is a donation station which I was more than happy to donate. Highly recommended at all times of the year.Written 11 December 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. With its very unassuming exterior, it was difficult to know what to expect, but we were not disappointed inside.
Not only is the building well maintained, it is evident this is very much still a functioning place of worship, complete with Children's activity spaces. Detailed plaques show the history of the cathedral and the staff were both welcoming and knowledgeable. I particularly liked the extra touches, such as the communal jigsaws on the tables, as well as the candle writing and prayer request spaces that encouraged visitors to interact with the cathedral, rather than to simply admire it.Written 8 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. For no known reason, the small lake was called the Loch of Menteith until the 1800s. Caledonian Canal connects Scotland’s east coast near Inverness to the west coast at Corpach near Fort William along a diagonal slash that includes Loch Ness. There are a total of 29 locks, lots of locks. The canal and locks system were constructed in the early 1800s. The total length is about 60 miles, and a third of that is constructed. The canal and lock system reduced cargo ship transit time by days, much as the Panama Canal sped cargo ships between oceans from a month to a single day.
The canal has several names in Scottish Gaelic including Amar-Uisge/Seòlaid a’ Ghlinne Mhòir (“Waterway of the Great Glen”) and Sligh’-Uisge na h-Alba (“Waterway of Scotland”). I walked along both sides of the “lock ladder” and enjoyed hot cappuccino at the Visitor Center on that cold, misty day.Written 7 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Went to cafe at midday to find most things sold out with only a few baguettes more suitable for adults left for sale. People were leaving the food queue in disgust having been advised that was all there was. Bearing in mind that a Chitty Chitty Bang Band matinee is predominantly populated by children and was a full house I would have expected cafe management and staff to do better. The show however was wonderful as is the theatre itself. .Written 15 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Thomas&TammyHammond, LA112 contributionsWas happy to see this large castle when in Inverness, though we knew it was closed. Someone mentioned the better view from across the river, so we took some nice photos there. But scaffolding was in place on one section which kind of marred the shot, so to speak.Written 13 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MR19702602Staffordshire, UK1,455 contributionsWow just such a hidden gem. Parking is a nightmare as no car park for this so have to park on the road.
Walk over the bridges to the islands and a beautiful walk round tarmac pavements. Perfect for dog walks.
