What travellers are saying
- on_the_go_98765Tucson18,350 contributionsOur tour included transportation (not a pretty picture otherwise). We had the luxury of getting off a bus and hoofing it through this quaint town. And, my-oh-my, was the incoming traffic a thing of nightmares! This teeny little town (not even 3,000 people live here) was descended upon by a human swarm equal to the locust plagues.
We lived much of our lives in Laguna Beach, California and know a thing or two about locust hordes descending upon our solitude to do whatever it is tourists do. And they bring money.
However, this historic little town center is indeed charming in every possible sense of the word. Blessed by sunny skies and mild temperatures, this brief stop was nothing if not perfect.
What indeed, made it actually "historic"? I am still pondering that. Maybe traditional is a better "catch" phrase. The traditional granite and white washed buildings certainly deserve their kudos. Maybe it is the remembrance of the watermills and the role that played in the village history. Only 4 of them remain today (eye candy).
This was a destination for the art movement and Gauguin was a major instigator (and we will forever be thankful) in bringing this beauty to light. And he would, of course, know a thing or two about bringing beauty to light.
Just as a personal aside, do most certainly go to the art museum and drink in the history through art. It was our most favorite part of our short stay here.Written 23 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The show is absolutely sensational, both in its conception and its execution, Should it still be on, it's worth a detour...Written 13 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. We started with the maize maze, which was great -: there was Phileas Fogg special event going on, and the adventure challenges made it all the better - the characters who met you along the way, testing your answers and challenging you were brilliant - our 6 year old loved it. It took about 1 hr 15 so it needs to be good to keep their attention!
The rest of the park is lovely - the goats are particularly entertaining, but the rides, the dinosaur walk, the inflatable parkour sections and the various things to run around in were all good.
The only downside would be the number of things that a kid under 1.2m has to miss out on….but the older kids looked like they loved them, so he just has to get taller!Written 1 September 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The church is awash with grotesque figures and grinning horrible faces of men and animals. Looking up at the rafters is a trip into another world. So glad it isn't ours. The restoration thankfully saved these Medieval visitations so we can ponder them today.
A really lovely portrait shows Saint Anne teaching little Mary how to read. All of us were children, once upon a time, even Mary.
But the piece that fixates one and all is the statue of the sacrificed Christ, who, over the ages has picked up a slightly yellow patina from varnish or whatever. No, he is not yellow but Gaugin will paint him as "the yellow Jesus" because this is how he visualized him here in this church.
This truly was a highlight of our visit to Pont Aven. The Gothic carvings along the tops of the eaves were exceptional opportunities to look back in time.Written 23 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Xavier Grall walked the walk and talked the talk and was an ardent proponent of laissez faire. Back off, France.
How appropriate it is that this leader should be honored with a plaque and a promenade along the city's most beautiful waterways. Note his emblem has a small white ermine (as in the animal) at the bottom: the ermine is a specific Breton symbol for "death rather than defilement." It shows up on their local flag, too.
And in the here-and-now, this delightful promenade runs along the river Avon and the garden (circa 1985) is lovingly tended by locals (the city's gardeners) with attention to the changing seasons. Stones, water, and flowers will be memorable.
Once upon a time, women would kneel here to wash their clothes. Today the site remembers a man bigger than life whose flame burnt out before its time (1930-1981).
And now we know why there is a small creature at the bottom of his bronze memorial piece. And maybe we also know how important he was and is to Bretons.Written 23 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - on_the_go_98765Tucson18,350 contributionsOur day tour began in Pont-Aven and this was the day the Farmers Market (and fair) was in progress. The vendors line their tables up and sell everything from amazingly fresh local fruits to bakeries, vegetables, gifts, and anything else you could find in a gift shop.
The vendors will line their trucks up against the wall of the quay by their tables. It makes for a crowded but enjoyable walk past the vendors stations. The Market is in the area of some very beautiful homes and flower settings which only adds to the memorable experience.Written 25 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
