Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The best thing to do in town is to take a long walk along the top of the city walls. The views of the bay, sea, harbor, and the town are extraordinary. You will find statues along the way and see some restaurants down below.

A very scenic beach beginning from the Intra-murks and heading north. It is of hard sand, not that wavey and extremely clean. In early September, there weren’t many bathers but a lot of people strolling on the sand. The most memorable aspect of the beach are the tides, that come in very fast in the evening and submerge most of it.

We visited here primarily to get out of the heat of the day! It was well maintained and had some beautiful specimens. Unfortunately the translation from French to English at each tank is very poor.
It doesn't compare to the outstanding aquariums at Brest and Cherbourg, but we still enjoyed it.

A nice and interesting 17th century fort which protected St-Malo from invaders. Great example of early military engineering. The only issue I had was that there was that the only signage was in French (which unfortunately I did not master). We walked to the fort via the beach, BUT BEWARE, in late afternoon, the tide comes in really quick and deep which would make the beach route impossible — one need a boat to exit or enter the fort. Pls see the photos below.

We found this gem of a wine shop during a recent weekend visit to St Malo. We were impressed with the range of wines, competitively priced together with the expert advice from the owners.

Speaking very little French but always trying (and trying) we turned up just as a tour was finishing to ask if there were any English tours. Unfortunately there weren't off season but we got chatting to Marc Canax De Bowfils (sp?) the guide who said his English wasn't very good but would take us on a quick tour and attempt it in English. What a great experience! Just my wife and I and Marc, going around the house and hearing the history. His English was good and, to be fair, only needed a few more guided tours in English to sort out the rest.

Thank you Marc for a great experience and taking your time out to show us English non-French speakers a tour.

This church is in the absolute center of the old city. Re-built after the WWII bombing, it has an old feel. Most impressive were the massive stained glass windows which let in a lot of light. The windows have a modern style and modern craftmanship.

This is a very pleasant walk to take along the water's edge. Not a very long distance, and best done when it is sunny and the wind is manageable. Views of the sea and the islands off shore.

Being from Québec, I had interest in visiting the museum while my expectation was not very high. However, the museum was among my kids favorite in the region. The day we visited, they had ancient toys and workshop on tying knots. The house has a old maps that were very interesting. We also learned about the history of the discovery. We actually stayed for three hours beyond our expectations. Bravo to the team.

We spent 4 nights at this wonderful luxury hotel mid-may 2024. There are a lot of hotels in St. Malo to choose from but we wanted to stay intra-muros to get the experience of staying inside a walled city. Le Grand Be has a spa, restaurant, bar, and paid guest parking, and the price was very reasonable for this caliber of hotel. We chose the Suite because, along with a separate sitting room, there is also a private balcony with 2 seats and a table, which came in handy when it was time for cocktails. From the balcony, there is a view of Le Grand Be island. The rooms were nice, bright and airy, with A/C, 2 TVs, and a coffee maker and electric teapot. The WC is separate from the bathroom, and the bathtub is French-style, with a handheld shower but no wall attachment. In other words, to bathe, you sit in the bathtub and grab the handheld shower to rinse. We actually went to the spa for 2 days to use the sauna and relax, so we showered down there in their large showers.
Breakfast was delicious, typical of French hotel breakfast buffets, with several specialty galettes and pastries from Bretagne. The bar has an extensive cocktail, wine, beer, aperitif, digestif, and drink menu, and there are also several delicious mocktails that we tried. We didn't have the chance to eat in the hotel restaurant for lunch or dinner.
The location of Le Grand Be can't be beat. It is only a 10-minute walk (5 if you walk as fast as we do) to Porte Saint-Vincent, where you can find a lot of restaurants, bakeries, food stores, and shops. From there, you can take pretty much any street that branches off and find more restaurants, bars, shops, sandwich shops, bakeries, ice cream stands, patisseries, etc etc. Make sure you try a Kouign-Amman when you are in Bretagne. The entrance to the ramparts is a 2-minute walk from the hotel, from which you can walk around the city and get astounding views of the islands and Channel. You can also access the beach and walk to the Fort du Petit Be, island of Grand Be, and Fort National during low tide. Seeing the difference between high and low tide is impressive.
To get to the hotel, you enter via the Porte St-Louis, not the Porte St-Vincent as some sites indicate. All of the streets are one-way with a sea of humanity walking in front of you and not paying attention, so it takes some patience to drive inside the walls. It takes about 15 minutes to drive to the St Malo Aquarium, 50 minutes to Mont St Michel, and 25 minutes to drive to the oyster capital of Europe, Cancale. We highly recommend going to all 3.
The next time we are in St Malo, we wouldn't hesitate to stay at Le Grand Be again. We loved the hotel, and our visit to St Malo!
Tip: There are at least 25 French TV stations, but curiously nothing in English, which is perfect if you want to immerse yourself in French. You can stream on YouTube if you must have English TV.

Absolutely beautiful beach in a stunning location directly below the St Malo ramparts.

Clean, tidal beach with a great purpose built sea pool with a high diving board. Perfect for all the family from little ones to grandparents, wheelchair and pushchair friendly.

We were really impressed. It was bigger than I expected and had a great variety of animals. There was genuinely interesting information about each animal and to my mind it was the perfect amount with a good layout.
