One of the required boxes to check when writing a review here is when did you go. It isn't that I just went In January 2025, but more that I have been to Paris 10x and have been to the Marais on all 10 occasions and for more than one day on most trips.
Why
Great Museums
Great Shopping
Great Restaurants
Rather than review everything in an individual review, I am going to list most if not all here and give you a quick snapshot of yes, no or waste of time.
The Marais was the SWAMP of Paris and the most undesirable of central Paris locations. It is where the Jewish community resided and grew before WWII and still has many elements of its historical past - restaurants, museums, and synagogues. It is also where the LGBTQ community moved to in the 80's onward.
The Marais is located in the 3rd and 4th arrondissements and because of the breadth and depth of to-do's in the area, you will find yourself spending a lot of time here if you're a traveler. If you're a tourist, you will still find yourself here as well,
Major Attractions
Musee Picasso - I consider this a tier 2 art museum in Paris. Not a definite no, and if you're a Picasso fanatic, then consider it, but there are so many other art museums in Paris that should come first, consider this on your third or fourth visit to Paris.
Musee Carnavalet - A must stop in the Marais. Plan. to spend 2-3 hours touring the museum which is FREE and is the HISTORY of PARIS MUSEUM.
Hotel de Ville - City Hall - Currently there is a post-Olympic exhibition that is free but requires a reservation
Place des Voges - One of the most beautiful squares/parks in Paris. In one corner is the Victor Hugo House/museum. Along the outside are various art galleries and a Carrette which is a must-stop for your Parisian Chocolat Chaud fix.
Museum of Jewish Art and History
Marché des Enfants Rouges - Oldest outdoor market in Paris. FANTASTIC Eats including Les Enfants due Marche inside and Chez Alain Miam Miam across the street and known for the best sandwich in Paris
Centre Pompidou - Modern Art Museum. Closing in the summer of 2025 for 10 years.
National Archives- Hotel Soubise - SKIP. There are better "mansions" to visit in Paris and unless you are interested in the current special exhibition, it isn't worth the 60-90 minute stop.
Major shopping but closer to the Seine side is BHV. For Americans, this would be like. Macy's
Musee des Arts Metiers - Science Museum. I haven't gone yet, but it is on my list.
Old Jewish Quarter - filled with good food like L'As du Falafel (famous cheap eats in Paris, Miznon, and patisserie Yann Couvreur
Maison Hugo - Located in the Place des Voges. Les Miserables was written here. Excellent small museum. FREE and worth the 45 minutes.
Major Streets
Shopping streets -
Rue des Francs-Bourgeois: The main shopping street in the Marais, which is pedestrian and busy on Sundays
Rue des Archives and Rue du Temple: Home to trendy boutiques for men's and women's clothing
Rue Charlot, Rue de Birague, Rue Vieille du Temple, and rue du Roi de Sicile: Small streets with lots of boutiques
Other Major streets
Rue des Rosiers - Jewish area
Boutiques, cafes, and bakeries
Rue Crémieux
Famous pastel-colored buildings - postcard picture
I could write 10 paragraphs more about the great restaurants or more sites to see. It is really an area worth the time
