Beautiful catholic cathedral in the medieval city of Carcassonne. It has services on Saturdays and Sundays but you can go in anytime to look at the beautiful stained windows and architecture so long as you are respectful.

I was delighted to stumble across this museum on holiday as I love military history. Despite most of the information only being in French, we really enjoyed looking around as David, the curator, gave us an enthusiastic personal tour (which I believe he does for any visitors who would like one).

The museum is full of interesting objects and uniforms etc, as well as providing some detail on Carcassonne in WW2.

This former school has two main classrooms and three extra rooms to explore. Each room is adorned with teaching aids dating from 1880s to 1960s. It was fun to see these and even better to try out the quill pens whilst squeezed in awkwardly at a child’s school desk. They’ve even got hopscotch in the playground.

More austere and far less elaborate than the basilica in La Cité. We wondered in, did a circuit around the pews and then exited - in and out in three minutes.

The history of the building alone makes the visit worthwhile. The works of art on display may not be well known but they are impressive and varied. They are representative of different generations with some permanent and others temporary. Many have been donated and cover subject matter seen in more famous locations around the world. We enjoyed our time in the mused and staff were so friendly and helpful.

Went to the haunted house at kids (aged 6 & 8) insistence as they had spotted it day before. So the guys on the door asked us did we want
the adult experience or the child one, I choose adult one thinking it wouldn’t be scary at all. So they said well if you change your mind
    call out “L’enfant”.

So in we go, first room dark and tiny and walls start closing in and steam everywhere, I can feel someone behind me. Kids start panicking.

Door opens to next room, you have 10 secs to get through, we go through and spookiness stepped up a notch with further darkness and
    dampness and horrible noises.

Kids were hysterical by the stage, husband calls out l’enfant, l’enfant, and dim lights come on and some effects die down and I guess
the guy, who we later saw outside in a cloak, backs off.

Kids still hysterical, grandmother not much better. It was frighting but so funny.

Next we’re in a room that’s like a lift shaking & rattling then into another room with coffins & weird doll heads- I suspect whose eyes
light up if we had stayed on adult program. Kids still pretty frantic.

Series of more small rooms follows one with spooky re-animator movie and then we’re in another tiny room bathed in red light and we’re
sprayed with dry ice. Next thing I know my mother has fainted – which she denied – I caught her and she came to very quickly.

Once I ascertained she was ok I just started laughing uncontrollably and kept laughing on and off for the rest of the day. At some point
we went through a spooky outdoor part with the spookiest tree ever, finally after a few more stumbling’s we fell out a door onto a back
    street.

Kids in tears, grandmother denying she was feint (said she slipped on water), mother rolling around the street laughing, father trying to
    console kids.
    Best day ever!

Not knowing the history of Joë Bousquet we spent a bit of time talking with the Curator before visiting the exhibits as she offered us a wealth of information & detail about the history of the house, past residents, and the current exhibitions. After Joë Bousquet was paralyzed as a result of an bullet wound in WWII he lived in the home where he socialized with many well-known poets, as well as painters and philosophers of that century. There are some of his writings on display as well as other special exhibits. Don't miss his bedroom, untouched since his death in 1950. The house itself is architecturally interesting and has a long history as the former home of a wealthy family, and later Gentlemans' Lounge and so on. Note the painted ceiling beams in the exhibition rooms - quite unique.

On the river next to the Bastide side of the old bridge (leading to the roads up to the La Cite Medievale). Not overly impressive as Chartres or Rouen, but a cool respite for quiet reflection. Dates to the early 16th century and was close to the many hospitals in Carcassonne. The ill and infirm, and their families, could visit to receive blessings and spiritual solace in a time when medicine and public health measures were less developed.

Tucked away in the Bastide, this church dates back to the 13th/14th centuries and is fascinating to explore, but is in need of some TLC, so it is good to see that a major refurbishment programme is under way.

Don't let that stop you popping in to visit what you can see of this Gothic church which is designed around a single nave.

Good or bad is the wrong axis on which to judge this particular attraction. Shop mannequins in party wigs being tortured, an outdoor gallows and explanations in quite poor but occasionally wildly entertaining English. A truly grisly collection of bizarre and ghoulish implements. Whoever set this up doesn’t like the Catholic Church and while I sympathise a little, history museums have got to be a bit more even handed than this if they want to be taken seriously- although given the above mentioned shop mannequin torture party perhaps they don’t mind?

    Lovingly, grotesque. A brilliant monstrosity.

We paid the chapel a flying visit on our way to the Medieval City, it really is a hidden gem.
This chapel was built by the congregation of the Dominican sisters in 1860, on the Gothic Languedoc style that was very popular with other religious sites in the city at the time of the second Napoleonic Empire.
It has a lovely central stained-glass window, and the rest of the interior is painted chalk white. In the past it was used as a girl’s school, but today it is a place for cultural events, like art exhibitions of local Occitan and Catalan artists.
When we were there was a collection of black and white photos on the one wall, and an interesting collection of Grain storage silos paintings on another.

TIP: Good place to take a small break from the sun on a hot day, and its free.

My mother and I recently visited Carcassonne and had a wine tasting on our bucket list. Vins and Vino's was the perfect pick! Right around the block from where we were staying and such a reasonable rate. Alex tailored the evening to our liking, including a range of different wines. His in depth knowledge and passion really reigns through when he takes you through each sample. With wines from every corner of the languedoc region you could spend all day here. Fresh local nibbles to see you through the thoroughly enjoyable evening.
A must for anyone visiting Carcassonne.

This is a splendid, and quite large, indoor soft play area with café. It's well maintained and kept clean, with areas for infants as well as children. Great for your kids if they are bored, or if it's a rainy day.

Remember to take socks for your kids if they have bare feet, in sandals for example, socks are mandatory.

my wife had the "Total relaxation for her" spa treatment. She has had quite a few treatments all over the world, but said it was the best she had ever had.

Wouldn't normally visit Irish bars when abroad, but we were meeting friends and needed somewhere easy to find. This place fit the bill. And we are so glad we went there. What a friendly place. Good ales, local & Irish. Cosy seating area around the bar, but also more spacious at the rear, where you will find the TV for sport. We were there late afternoon, so can't comment on the evening entertainment, but imagine it will be good.
