Carcassonne was a very convenient stop on our route to visit our daughter who lived in Font Romeu. It was recommended to us by friends and, conveniently enough, was another World Heritage Site to add to our list! The Cite de Carcassonne is a medieval fortress dating back to the Gallo-Roman period. Restoration work was begun in 1853 by the architect Eugene Violett-le-Duc. The importance of this site as a trading centre dates back to the 6th century. Nowadays, its importance is heavily influenced by the tourist. We were there in early May and this was already very evident. No, matter, there were still places that were somewhat away from the bustle. We didn't have long to spend there, but still wanted to experience a feel for the place, so we ventured into the centre a bit and then decided to do a scenic tour of the outer perimeter. This fortified city consists of 2 outer walls, with 53 towers and barbicans to aid in defence. It sits up high enough to give a scenic view of the surrounding town.
We had parked in the lower town and had a fairly long walk up to the entrance of the fortress. A bit of research and, as we discovered, we could actually have driven right up the main entrance, but there is nothing wrong with a bit of exercise, right. Also, our route went though a pretty neighbourhood, as well as crossing over the Auld River on the 14th century Ponte Vieux.
Add another World Heritage Site to the list, the Canal du Midi. It flows through Carcassonne, actually, just on the other of the Cite de Carcassonne.
It would definitely warrant more time to look around, explore the fortress, as well as the ville basse (lower town), where the Carcassonne Cathedral is located.

Really nice castle and well restored. Great place with kids, to watch though for not falling down. Though our stay in Carcassonne was ruined by the aggressiveness and violation by her to us and our property when we told her friendly we didn’t like the apartment at reu Les Babes 26 (Mme Christine), this experience was worthwhile. Recommended.

Beautiful catholic cathedral in the medieval city of Carcassonne. It has services on Saturdays and Sundays but you can go in anytime to look at the beautiful stained windows and architecture so long as you are respectful.

Visited the base of Château de Quéribus and Peyrepertuse for the view. These castle ruins were the last strong holds of the Cathars, a Christian dualist sect in western France. They are perched at the top rugged cliffs and seem impossible to have been built, especially in the 12th and 13th centuries. For anyone interested in Medieval history, these castles are worth the drive.

I was delighted to stumble across this museum on holiday as I love military history. Despite most of the information only being in French, we really enjoyed looking around as David, the curator, gave us an enthusiastic personal tour (which I believe he does for any visitors who would like one).

The museum is full of interesting objects and uniforms etc, as well as providing some detail on Carcassonne in WW2.

This is a small place, but well worth a visit if you're staying in Carcassonne. Kangaroo area was great but we enjoyed seeing the other animals as well. Our three year old loved it.

There is a tour, which is only in French, but you can apparently download an app which has information in English. It wouldn't work for me, but we still enjoyed seeing the animals anyway.

Bear in mind that if you just want to feed the animals, you don't have to attend the whole tour; you can just join the tour group at the end for the feeding part. When you buy your ticket they'll tell you where and when to join.

This place is unspoilt beauty. A 5km walk with many water sports on offer. We went early - then couldn’t figure how to get to
The cafe terrace! A few more signs would be good. Lots of shade - recommend it!

This Bridge has a great view of the medieval city. A great place to take photos, excellent views of La Cite at night. It is the main street into the historic fortified city.

Porte Narbonnaise is the main gate to enter to the old town of Carcassonne, a wonderful Middle Ages town located in the South of France. It was built in the 12th Century and it was reconstructed in the 19th Century. Nowadays, it is a very beautiful gate, which you see, if you visit the old town of Carcassonne, because I am sure you will enter from here. It has a drawbridge, from where you can see very nice views of the old town and the walls. I came here with my 6 years old daughter and she liked very much here taking photos.

More austere and far less elaborate than the basilica in La Cité. We wondered in, did a circuit around the pews and then exited - in and out in three minutes.

La Porte de l'Aude is one of the entrances to the fortress of the old town of Carcassonne. It is in a little road, which go up to the fortress, in Occitanie Region, in the South of France. It is a very nice gate, from where you can see very beautiful views of the wall and some towers of the old town. Very recommendable, when you walk inside the city, come here and enjoy with views.

Lovely square in the lower new town of Carcassonne where you can dine and drink and watch life go by. There are a number of bars, cafes and restaurants that give you the opportunity to relax into the feel of the new town. Worth a visit.

Portail des Jacobins is a big gate located in one of the entrances of Grand-Carcassonne, which is surrounded by a road. Here you can see the gate and there is a square, where there are some restaurants and bars, and it is possible to come here and play with children. Nice place to enter to new Carcassonne (not to the old Middle-Ages town). Beautiful, if you walk around the city, in the average.

We had a fabulous day with Rachel who looked after us for the day. The weather was not kind to us but it didn't spoil the day.
We all learnt so much about the region and wine making in general.
We also visited an olive cooperative which was fascinating and included a tasting of olives and oil. This was followed by an hour on the Canal du Midi with local wines, a lovely local lunch and a trip to Minerve. The day was rounded off with a tour to an amazing chateau estate vineyard with a unique growing methodology and another wine tasting. A fun filled day enjoyed by us all.

Great tour. Perfect balance of history, stories, wine, food, and walking. Brent chose some great stops and took some really nice pictures that he shared with us.
