I met our guide, Rachel, in front of the Sun God fountain at 10:45 and waited for the other couple to arrive. Rachel is a tall Swiss blonde who has worked for this company since November. The French couple arrived, they spoke very little English, so much of the tour was speaking French.
1st stop, an olive oil shop where olive oil, tapenade, truffle items were sold. The young man that spoke with us is the son of the owner of their family business. He explained the process of how the olives were picked from the trees, he showed pictures as well as items they use to collect, and squeeze the oil from the olives. The difference between extra virgin oil and others. This was all very informative, and I really enjoyed it. We tasted olive oil that had been infused with basil, smelled truffle oil, tasted salted laced with truffles. I will definitely be going back to purchase some items to use myself while I continue my travels and take home to my mother.
2nd stop, a wine shop where we tasted 3 kinds of wine that are all organic, meaning no filtration or chemicals added. Meats, cheeses, and bread were provided as well. The four of us sat there and chatted and asked questions about each other. It was great to practice my French, and I believe I helped them with their English as well.
3rd stop, a street food shop where Socca was the most popular item. Socca is made from chickpeas (garbanzo bean flour) This place cooked the socca in a wood burning oven, so it had a wonderful smoky flavor. They also had a pie like Swiss chard dish.
4th stop, this wonderful pastry shop. I had a chocolate mousse like dessert and an expresso. My favorite would have to be this coconut, passion fruit cake like dessert that the French gal allowed me to taste. It was fantastic.
5th stop, a confectionary shop, which has been around for 5 generations. We tasted this confit, which was a tangerine that had been cooked daily for a month and half to bring out the natural sugars. You eat the rind and all, and very honey like. All kinds of chocolate candies, even liquors and wine.
This was an amazing experience. Rachel was so attentive, and there to translate as I needed. She was so inviting and such a pleasure to spend 3.5 hours with. This company has tours in other countries that I will be visiting and will do this again in Italy.
