- FaithfultravelerHalifax, Canada3,363 contributionsThis ancient port gate goes back to c.170A.D., when the Romans built it to protect the northern entrance into the city. - FaithfultravelerHalifax, Canada3,363 contributionsThe main market of Trier is the central marketplace, and one of the largest squares in this ancient city: In 958A.D., Archbishop Henry I, decorated the main market with the market cross as a symbol of sovereignty. The main market was a place for selling goods and trading in the medieval city.Written 16 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The complex was constructed in the early 4th century AD, during the reign of Constantine I. During that time, Trier was a major imperial hub, being a primary residence for Constantine's son Crispus. - MerrowmumGuildford, UK1,389 contributionsWhat a fascinating place! Architecturally this rotunda design is so unusual. The contrast between the ancient original structure and the gorgeous post-WWII stained glass windows was lovely - the light gave a superb interior atmosphere. The windows are beautiful in of themselves. Don’t forget to stand on the star by the entrance to be able to see the medieval frescoes of the apostles all at once.
The entrance doorway is also impressive and with an interesting story of its own.Written 13 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Today it is used as the Church of the Redeemer and owned by a congregation within the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland. The basilica contains the largest extant hall from antiquity. We visited during Sunday service, so no photos from inside, however, we did enjoy being advised that this is the only evangelical church in Trier: sharing the Good News of Christ Jesus!Written 16 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ERLINDA WPuyallup, WA15 contributionsWe flew to Frankfurt, Germany to visit our son and his wife, who is station in Ramstein AFB. We visited Trier on recommendation of our son. While our son is working, my husband and I did some exploring in Trier and visited many sites including this museum, walkable from the Hauptmarkt square. This museum is worth a visit. It's got a lot of history of Trier. If you're a history buff, like me and my husband, you'll be amaze at this place.Written 7 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - machinmadYaxley, UK2,655 contributionsAn historic building where the man himself lived. The interior walls have now been painted white and black information writing, which chronicles Marx’s life and influence, adorns every space.
Even if you fundamentally disagree with Marxism, this museum is well presented and informative … a unique perspective on this unique man.Written 18 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It now houses various offices of the federal government and often hosts classical music concerts. - ASinHONGKONGHong Kong, China83 contributionsWe did a day trip to Trier and booked this restaurant for lunch. It was a pleasant surprise. The pay system is quite unique here, as we had to settle the bill when ordering the food and then had the items brought to our table. The roast calf sausage with sauerkraut as well as the pork loin steak were just hearty and satisfactory to the taste buds. Not to forget, the local dry Riesling from this Mosel area - probably never ever exported - is essential to accompany the meal! Even on a Tuesday in the low season, the place was packed full of locals - always a positive sign to an excellent eatery!Written 31 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Kelly BIowa5,608 contributionsThis is such a gorgeous church that I’m almost shocked that more people haven’t reviewed it on here. It is a little bit of a walk from Porto Nigra and Altstadt, but the payoff is worth it. It’s about a 10 -15 minute walk from Porto Nigra to this church, depending on your pace.
The elaborate inside is kind of a surprise. Someone was praying in one of the front pews and I didn’t want to disturb them, so I quickly took a few pictures from the back of the church, and quietly left. I then went outside, and walked around the church’s cemetery. It was very serene and peaceful.Written 7 March 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
