Fortunately, local government seems to have worked with academic institutions and experts to uncover, explain and celebrate Cartagena's historic sites and this one is a gem.
Consider getting a multiple ticket with other roman sites in the city - all within easy walking distance of Calle Mayor - and all very reasonably priced.

The Palacio Consistorial is a stunning structure, inside and out, and there are a good many reasons for the city to be proud of this landmark.

The Calle Mayor has many store and lots of restaurants, and it's only a few steps away from the lovely Town Hall/Port area and several fascinating archeological sites.
The city was easily reached on good roads 100 k south of Alicante airport, when one can view all the lovely orange and lemon groves and vegetable growing areas, plus the arid mountains.

The guns on the top of the hill are impressive, military buildings slowly deteriorating but fascinating to explore, views are amazing, so it's really worth going.
There you can enjoy great views of the Mediterranean Sea and 2 381 mm Vickers guns.

The frescoes are amazing, and the animated views of the rooms in the film of daily life give a real sense of the period.

Great way to reach the top and to stop and see the the civil war shelters and the palace of conception, great views across Cartengena and the cost is very small.
