I've left my review of Rome's metro subway system to the very last. What started with great promise on the first trips to Circo Massimo & Repubblica at fairly reasonable 1.5E charges, quickly deteriorated with typical Italian flair! I have travelled the metros in London, Paris , Berlin & New York to name just a few , with large crowds but Roma takes the cake. The crowds were pretty intense but little, if none, official supervision. At Spagna station I was the victim of a pickpocket, who I grabbed but my wallet had already been passed on. The Cops, in this case, Carabinieri, were absolutely hopeless! Prancing around in their colourful uniforms but didn't want to action my report? Quote: "Signori, not our problem, go to Polizia!" To compound the issue, I wasn't allowed to enter the Polizia Station to report the theft as I had no Identification? Having your wallet stolen with all your ID kind of leaves with no ID!! So my advice to fellow travellers is to give the metro a miss and walk as the busses are not much better and the Rome Police forces are a joke!
