Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Described as a food theme park with rides, I was quite excited to visit. The "rides" were just exhibitions about different types of Italian food - they were interesting but didn't meet the expectation of the description. I was there on a Saturday lunchtime which I assumed would be super busy but it was like a ghost town there - most restaurants and shops not open. It may be better during peak times when everything is open and activities are running but I was left quite underwhelmed.

I just completed VDD solo two days ago and thought I would share some things I found helpful.

    1. The walk+ app. It's mainly in Italian but it is translated into English. It is the best app I found for hiking VDD. it tells you topography and elevation gain and lots of other things that other apps don't tell you. It tracks your route for each day, and provides alternative paths (especially if others are blocked/flooded), and shows all the other paths that are nearby in case you want a shortcut, or to get to some accomodation or food or water fountains.

    2. Trekking poles. I underestimated how hard VDD was - It was very muddy/rainy when I did it and there is a lot of elevation gain and loss, and lots of walking on tarmac as well. Taking any stress off your legs/joints is very worthwhile.

    3. Some of the stays I chose were 2-3km off route, which after 25-30 k of walking with a 10kg pack can feel like a huge obstacle. At certain times of year the agriturismos etc are shut, which was part of the problem for me, and I planned my whole trip within 3 weeks of doing it, but I wish I had picked places nearer to the track. I sometimes chose places for cost saving purposes, but I think that if cost isnt an issue for you, staying closer to the path is better.

I am of mid level fitness, and I think it would have been reasonable to space it over 7 days to have got more enjoyment. I was quite tired most days. I did it in 6, and I still had to walk 28 and 32 km on days 5 and 6 (partly because I chose B&Bs too far off the track). I also went straight back to Bologna on the train the same day that I finished in Firenze and flew back from Bologna the next morning. This was all I had time for, but if I could have I would have stayed in Firenze for a couple of days.

This is a monumental staircase created in the early 20th century to celebrate the Italian Unification. The staircase consists of three parts: the stairs, the portico along the middle part of the staircase and the and the portico along via Indipendenza.

The main decorations are the central fountain and two bas-reliefs on via Indipendenza. The centrepiece is the fountain with a sculpture depicting a nymph attacked by an octopus, the latter being an allegorical reference to Neptune. The fountain is flanked by reliefs representing learning and liberty of Bologna.

On the mezzanine level, there are three other bas-reliefs, with historical themes linked to the events that led to the unification, including the expulsion of the Austrians and the destruction of the Galliera fortress.

The upper level links the staircase with Parco della Montagnola and has a terrace with panoramic views of Bologna in the direction of Bologna Centrale.

A lovely park and make sure you stop by the café (but bring cash!) - a real casual community vibe with very friendly staff.

this could be an amazing chill out place if the local Council gave it a bit more attention and start by clearing away the drunks and users

I researched directions to this place as I planned to walk there one morning. By accident, I found that you could walk through the park that surrounds the complex so that was definitely an added bonus. It was good to walk through 'greenness'!! I was rewarded with great views over Bolonga just as the sun was rising.

The Botanical Garden of the University of Bologna was founded already in 1568. It is located in Via Irnerio, in the University area.

This garden is quite small. There are some greenhouses.

    The entrance is free.
