Direct access tickets you purchase on line may still require a wait of a half hour or more; guides lead you directly into the Palace, no waiting. Once inside, if you are an arty, you might budget three or four hours for the entire visit... the highlight for us, certainly, were the dozens of paintings and frescoes by Tintoretto and Veronese. Rooms such as the Sala dell'Albergo, the Atrio Quadrato, Salla dell'Anticollegio, Sala del Collegio, Sala dello Scrutinio and Sala del Maggiore Consiglio all offer masterworks of Venetian art. Magnificent frescoes. - RonL40Utica, NY3,720 contributionsPerhaps the busiest site in Venice. The Byzantine mosaics inside the church are wonderful, not to be missed. If you are a day tripper, definitely worth the money to use a guide, who will escort you directly into the church. Otherwise, the lines may be quite long. For those who want to take panoramic photos of the city, the terrace is worth the visit. I hope it does not sink but they had water seeping up in the piazza.

You can only go up and down by lift, which was fine by us. The views all around are quite stunning. The rest is quite amazing to see and hear about the history of the place. - Christian MCopenhagen, Denmark6,223 contributionsWe’re lucky enough to be staying in the heart of the Cannaregio district, and we couldn’t be happier to be in such a calm and beautiful area just a 2-kilometer walk from St. Mark’s Square.
The restaurants and bars are cozier and more affordable—we imagine this must be what experiencing Venice in the old days would have felt like.

Visited in December and it soon became to too crowded to really enjoy the museum which is a relatively small collection in a series of smallish villa rooms. The collection is very impressive and the audio guide highlights Peggy Guggenheim's distinct personality, relations with the artists, and perspectives of the artists themselves. The Scuola's walls and ceilings are covered with over fifty huge frescoes and canvases by Tintoretto, some of best work he ever accomplished. The carved wood decorations by Marchiori are exceptional as well. One of the places in Venice that must be seen to be appreciated. Breathtaking. - Lucian MConstanta, Romania2,560 contributionsWhile we arrived on the small island of San Giorgio Maggiore, we also entered the church of the abbey with the same name. Access for visitors is free.
Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore is owned by the order of Benedictine monks. Its church was built between 1566 and 1610. Reconstruction and development work of the abbey extended in the centuries that followed. There is also a bell tower that I didn't know I could climb in. I missed a beautiful view of the city.
The interior of the church is decorated with paintings by Tintoretto in particular. Interestingly, Benedictine monks kept strict control over how the interior of the church was decorated and did not allow it to be left out of the hands of wealthy families in Venice, as is the case in many of the city's churches. Only two such cases are known here: the chapel to the right of the great altar belongs to the Bollani family, and the altar to the left of the sanctuary belongs to the Morosini family – by the way, one of the most beautiful palaces with a façade on the Grand Canal belongs to this family.Written 27 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Here, the streets are cozier, the crowds thinner, the osterias better, and the prices lower… naturally, as this is where the locals prefer to spend their time.
The only downside is that you might regret not staying here instead. We certainly did, and we’re based in Cannaregio, which isn’t bad at all. Wherever I go, if I have time and if it's easy to reach, I pass through the market at least once.
In the daily trips made by vaporetto along the Grand Canal I noticed the market in the area of the Rialto Bridge. On one of the days, arriving earlier in the area, I stopped at the Rialto Bridge, crossed it and headed to the Mercati di Rialto located in the San Polo district.
My expectations were not disappointed: many stalls with fresh products, especially fruits and vegetables, but also spices, pasta, pastries, small cheese shops, or meat dishes. I really liked Pescheria, that is the fish market. It is arranged in a large hall so that the goods are protected from seagulls who are a real nuisance in Venice.
The market has an old history.
