Shame the church was shut for renovation but as I understand it the entrance to the church is free anyway so it's not like we were paying for something we didn't get. There isn't a lot of explanation/signage/ historical interpretation but we just used Wikipedia! Well worth a visit. Also walk to the monument of the discoveries and Belem tower whilst in the area they are both worth a look. - Batty1960United Kingdom37 contributionsHaving seen the castle perched on a very steep hill as we arrived at our hotel, I wasn't particularly keen on visiting it. We actually set off on an exploratory stroll, starting off from Martim Moniz with two very steep escalators and carried on through the narrow winding streets and steep steps until we reached the castle wall. The actual entrance proved to be still some distance away, but it was interesting walking through the Alfama district and the oldest parts of the city.
It was worth the effort for the views alone. The castle is well maintained ( for a ruin) and has the largest collection of peacocks I have ever seen. The small museum displays items discovered on archaeological digs and explains the Carnation Revolution clearly. We somehow missed the Camera Obscura and I've recently discovered that there is even a hotel within the walls.
It was quite busy, even in February, but the queue was not too long. The worst thing was heading for what we thought was the exit, only to be diverted back and then have a rather long walk back to where we had entered. Fortunately, we discovered a lift down to Rua da Madalena, which eased the walk back to the hotel. - canadianinriyadhArizona221 contributionsWe walked all the way up as the tram seemed to be taking a break despite many people waiting for it. We were looking for the street art but only places we found some, they had quite a bit of graphite. Grabbed some lunch at a square that was set up with huts serving all kinds of foods and drinks and grabbed a bite there and people watched while we eat. Some street musicians which were great and a couple of art students selling their paintings. - Resort591225648332 contributionsAbsolutely brilliant! Popped into the Gulbenkian Museum while in Lisbon, and I’ve gotta say, it’s an absolute gem. The collection is top-drawer – everything from ancient artefacts to stunning modern pieces. The layout’s spot on, dead easy to wander through without feeling overwhelmed. Proper peaceful vibe too, perfect for a slow stroll taking it all in. Staff were friendly, knew their stuff, and the gardens outside? Just lush! Could’ve sat there all day. An elegant bohemian neighbourhood that essentially transports you back to the Belle Epoque era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, there's much to see and do (as well as to eat) here. Though most of the buildings originated from the 18th century, many were restored after a devastating fire in 1988. On the map, it appears next to the commercial district of Baixa, but on the ground, these 2 districts are located on 2 distinct elevations, with Baixa at the ground level whilst Chiado is on the higher elevation. This historic and cultural district is not too big and can easily be covered by foot once you get there by metro train, stopping at the Baixa-Chiado station and exiting on the Chiado side. With Rua Garrett shopping street as its spine, the area is constantly buzzing with people amidst the many boutique shops, cafes, theatres and museums dotting the neighbourhood. Not to be missed here are Livraria Bertrand (the world's oldest bookstore from 1732), Carmo Convent (Gothic church ruins that survived the devastation of the 1755 earthquake) and the Santa Justa lift that descends to the Baixa district. We caught ourselves trying to find the trades represented. It had an almost military look. Reminiscent of the Russian cemetery in Berlin). Quite stunning facing the sea.

We learned this the hard way because we happened to be near the cemetery and thought we'd take it back, but they are only running a shuttle bus out there.

It has all sorts of shops and places to eat/buy food.
