Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is a must-visit destination when in Helsinki. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating glimpse into Finnish history and military architecture. The sprawling complex, spread across several islands, provides stunning views of the surrounding sea. Walking through the fort's tunnels, museums, and parks is both educational and enjoyable. The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery make it a perfect spot for a day trip. Don't miss the chance to explore this historic gem!

This sprawling museum has a variety of old buildings spanning the history of Finland. It was put together very logically. From the grand Russian house and the manor building, to the bear cache and the haymakers cottage, there is something for everyone. A few buildings each day have people in them who represent historical types of Finns, and they all speak reasonably good English. There is a nice little cafe, a lot of singing and flying birds (no squirrels, though) and if you go off the beaten path there are all sorts of little trails that lead to spectacular views of the lake. Especially nice on a cool, sunny day. And clean and free washrooms!

You’ll get a good introduction to 20 th century Finnish history in the house of its first president. His life spans the time of czarist Russia up through WW I & Ii. The museum is his home right in the middle of the posh embassy neighborhood. Have a delightful stroll after through the neighborhood and to the park down ro the sea

This Jugend villa is located in a park by the sea in the Meilahti district. It was built in 1904. From 1940, it was one of the three official residences of the President of Finland.

The most important resident was President Urho Kekkonen who lived there 30 years 1956-1986 until his death. Since 1987, the villa has been the Urho Kekkonen Museum.

Tamminiemi is furnished the way it was in Kekkonen's time in the 1970s. In a separate building is the famous sauna which was used to entertain Kekkonen's domestic and foreign guests.

The house of merchant Johan Sederholm is located at the corner of the Senate Square. This stone house was completed in 1757. It was in its time the most impressive private home in Helsinki.

Today it is home to a Helsinki City Museum exhibition. The entry is free.

After a short boatride tasty pizza was wating us (we had ordered it at the same time as tickets to the boat) on the small island Katajanokanluoto. Although the weather was cold, athmosphere was warm and the trip made our day.

Once I read about the exterior of this old building, I had to find it! It is covered with carved beasts of all sorts and gargoyles which are taken from legend and folklore of Finland. I suppose it was the insurance company's reminder that beasts are out there and let us insure you!

The small yellow cottage has stood on the same place from 1818 and was even inhabited untill 1974 when other wooden houses were still scattered around central Helsinki. Opened as a free museum again recently it shows a glimpse of the petty bourgeoisie family life in the 19th century. There is a guide on location, a brochure in English has detailed information about the furniture and decoration items which come from the Helsinki city museum collection. The house is located in a peaceful angle of Kruununhaka and open from Wednesday to Sunday 11-17.

This idyllic wooden district was built for the working classes during the 1910s and 1920s. It has been many times condemned to demolition but over the years, it has become a coveted residential area.

Small plots along narrow streets follow the terrain. The streets are lined with wooden houses with mansard roofs and lush courtyard gardens.

The area is a pleasant place to have a stroll, especially during summertime.

The great Art Nouveau palace by Gustav Nyström from 1900 has remained quite unaltered also indoors though different small businesses rent the space temporarily. Protected by law as a National Monument the half vacant red brick beauty has a better future ahead. Stora Enso paper mill company situated in the iconic Alvar Aalto "Sugarcube" nearby will build new imposing head quarters in wood at the waterfront and the general plan with public areas includes the prestigious old Customs House too.

The Engel square named in honor of architect C.L. Engel, creator of the city's Empire center is a peaceful place with an English athmosphere of white benches and square shaped trees. The buildings in mainly Art Nouveau style of a hundred years ago are situated widely apart on their on own lots better suited for the upper class. Tehtaankatu which borders Eira used to lead to large factories like Fazer and the busy Helsinki Dock Yards, their workforce lived also near in Punavuori in tighter and poorer conditions.

Kesäranta was built in 1873 as a summer villa for an architect. It has a seaside location in the Meilahti area.

Initially, it was a two-story wooden villa, but in 1887, there was a 20-meter tower and a bayside veranda added to the building.

Since 1919, Kesäranta has served as the Prime Minister's official residence.

The area around the villa is well fenced. Also, there is a zone of prohibited airspace over the area.

What a wonderful place Lapinlahti is with a fascinating history of 180 years. I have visited several times there, attending different kinds events and just chillin in the lush park. I recommend warmly going for a visit, testing the different cafés, attending the events and just exploring. Interesting historical tours as well!
