Suomenlinna Sea Fortress is a must-visit destination when in Helsinki. This UNESCO World Heritage site offers a fascinating glimpse into Finnish history and military architecture. The sprawling complex, spread across several islands, provides stunning views of the surrounding sea. Walking through the fort's tunnels, museums, and parks is both educational and enjoyable. The peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery make it a perfect spot for a day trip. Don't miss the chance to explore this historic gem!

One of the more interesting churches I have ever encountered in visiting 50 countries. It is built sunken into a rock although the slats in the roof although light and visions of the sky to shine through. Truly remarkable place and well worth a short visit. Not sure they hold services here anymore although there were lots of wedding photos.

As first time visitor to Helsinki, the cathedral was a must to visit. The cathedral is located in Senate Square on top of a hill with a number of steps. The inside is very modest. The dome of the cathedral can be seen from various places in the city and is very impressive when coming into the south harbour on a ship.

An incredible place with some delicious local food!
Have a stroll, have a seat and appreciate smokes and salted salmon, seafood with a pinte of beer.

Uspenskin Cathedral is a magnificent and historic landmark in Helsinki. This Eastern Orthodox cathedral, perched on a hill overlooking the city, offers stunning architecture and breathtaking views. The interior is equally impressive with its beautiful icons and intricate details. The cathedral's serene atmosphere makes it a perfect place for reflection. Whether you're interested in architecture, history, or simply looking for a peaceful spot, Uspenskin Cathedral is well worth a visit.

This sprawling museum has a variety of old buildings spanning the history of Finland. It was put together very logically. From the grand Russian house and the manor building, to the bear cache and the haymakers cottage, there is something for everyone. A few buildings each day have people in them who represent historical types of Finns, and they all speak reasonably good English. There is a nice little cafe, a lot of singing and flying birds (no squirrels, though) and if you go off the beaten path there are all sorts of little trails that lead to spectacular views of the lake. Especially nice on a cool, sunny day. And clean and free washrooms!

First time visitor to Helsinki. Made my way to the square several times during my visit as it was the main meeting place for my walking tour and seemed like I always end up back at the square. There is a row of huts with food and beverages. Enjoyed brick fire pizza with local beer there. The weekend I was there, there was also a Car show in the square with lots of activities.

Esplanade Park is a large park in central Helsinki and dates back to 1818. It has well managed gardens and statues and the Kappell Restaurant that opened in 1867. This area is a public space for performances and events. You cannot miss the park when in Helsinki and a pleasant piece of green in what can be a fairly drab city

My first time in this building. The building itself was stylish and the art exhibition of Eero Järnefelt was amazing with lots of paintings and what a quality! I'm not an art lover, but these paintings made a big impression on me.

It is the main terminal for cruise ships within Finland and outside. We took a silja line cruise ship from Stockholm and arrived here.

Stopped for a quick walk through while waiting for the ferry to the island. I found it mildly interesting with many of the stalls selling the same kind of things. Expensive either way you cut it. We did buy some canned sardines and they were $10. Time for the ferry before we spend more.

Best choice was on Saturday when there seemed to be more stalls. Unlike most places they're not full of rubbish but nice homemade gifts. Everything from magnets to fur hat/ gloves, wooden items, knitted clothes, glassware. Nice place to wander for a while.
Also some food stalls which seem to be there most days.

I really like the location of this zoo , it’s on the island but easily accessible by bus from train station number 16 (3 times an hour) or by ferry from the harbour (every half hour in the summer).
Tickets are expensive but slightly cheaper after 4pm, however you can only buy discounted tickets in person and when we got there at 4, there was a long queue . I guess everyone had the same idea! So arrive slightly earlier.
Disadvantage coming in the evening was that we haven’t seen some animals e.g. monkeys as they always active in the morning. We also missed most of feeding times as there was only one slot left at 5pm.
Selection of animals is chosen to survive in cold climates so you won’t see giraffes, zebras and other regulars of the zoo. However they have some really interesting animals from colder climates. For me the highlight was Amur tiger and brown bears!
Everything inside is very expensive. One scoop of ice cream €5.50, bottle of water 0.5 litres cost €3.80!! So pack your own food and snacks. They have many places where you can have picnic and bring your own lunch which is great.

We took the ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm and it was such a bargain price to have a small cabin to ourselves we saved a bunch on flights/hotel. It was a bit of a jolty ride at times, and I did wake up at around 3.50am when we reached the Åland Islands because of that, but I don't regret it because I went on deck and got some beautiful pictures of the archipelago and the sunset. The several hours before reaching Stockholm were filled with so many beautiful islands and houses on the lake to see so highly recommend getting a coffee and sitting on deck 2 hours before arrival. Food and drink was predictably expensive, but not too bad. There was onboard entertainment but we didn't attend. There's a duty free style shop that's quite extensive also. The bar at the back sun deck was great, but the benches all along the side were also wonderful for sight seeing. Definitely the recommended way to enter Stockholm.
