Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An absolutely fascinating tour down a mine to hear the history of this form of artisan 'Freemining'. As a still active miner, Rick was a real fund of information on all aspects of this form of mining operation ....what a tough way to earn a living!!
Could not recommend this tour highly enough.

Great views from the viewpoint over river. The car park is a bit confusing but OK.
Good toilets and basic cafe. There are also a series of nice walks

Great walks. Seems to be quite difficult to navigate though as there are many mining/logging roads that don’t appear on maps and don’t always go the way you want. Seems to be lots of different coloured arrow type signs that don’t mean anything unless you’re “in the know”. I found my way by zig zagging in the direction I wanted to go.

A beautiful place with amazing photo opps, but it was a little confusing to get around. Didn't realise you have to pay almost a tenner to get in though...

As usual, an amazing time was had, 3 families went down with 5 children aged 1 to 7.
To see the excitement, with them all running around trying to find their names on the presents was wonderful. Santa had them all shout out his name on the count of 3 and they raised the roof. Coffee and cake after rounded off the day.

If you have a couple of hours to spare and kids like abit of a Forrest walk and play areas this is a good place to visit with the benefit of a steam train. It’s not a full day activity so please bare that in mind. Kids particularly liked the tree house section.

A tiny gem of a museum. When we visited two very friendly and knowledgeable gentleman showed us around and gave us a trip on the tiny train. I’m not a train enthusiast but still found the explanation of an old-fashioned signal box fascinating, and a real steam train was very impressive close up. Lots of interesting bits and pieces to look at and it’s obviously an enterprise maintained by an absolute love for the subject. Charming and refreshing.

We hired bikes for the Easter holiday break. We managed to hire the bikes the day before we visited.
The sign in was easy enough. Cycle hire was £70 for 2 adults and a child for the day. There are various tracks to follow, but we did the basic family one which was about 10 miles.
It was very quiet on the track and you see a lot of bird life along the way. There is a lovely cafe about 2/3rds through.
The cycle took a couple of hours, stop-starting to look at the forst you travel through. The wetaher was fortunatley good for us. As soon as we returned the bikes, the Heavens opened, but this did not put off regular riders, of whom there were many.

An interesting walk which was quite easy to follow if you bought the map at the cafe (£1). The route gave an excuse for a nice walk although the sculptures were generally not overwhelming. The need to maintain them and to enhance the route with new exhibits was apparent, but the cathedral window and the new reflective multi coloured fungi were very good.

There is lots to do but the parking system is poor. Parking is expensive, £3 for 2 hours, £5 for 4 hours, £7 all day. But how do you know how long you are going to be there? Also only two ticket machines, with only one taking cards. Forestry need to change the system, others sites have numberplate recognition and you pay for the time you are there.

But if you really want to save, park near Speech House or the Speculation and walk to Beechenhurst

Not large but beautiful selection of trees. Particularly loved the sequoia trees. Lovely and peaceful place. There are places to sit and ponder. An old fossil stone. Walks from the arboretum too.

This is a beautiful medieval church located in the picturesque village of Newland. I walked the burial path from Coleford and after sitting for a while in the churchyard went in to the peace and tranquillity of the church itself. It has many very interesting features; stained glass, monuments and the miners brass. It also displays some beautiful work by Beryl Dean the embroiderer.

Thanks to the local church community for keeping this church in its good condition and allowing it be open.

When you visit please don’t forget that the upkeep is helped by visitor donations.
