Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- MrsTCounty Durham, UK83 contributionsThoroughly enjoyed our visit here. The castle is not too big and has plenty of interesting artefacts to see. The ancient winding staircase up to the old nursery is very atmospheric. Plenty of information boards in each room so you get a feel for the history of the place. The café serves really tasty food and is not badly priced. Small gift shop with good quality wares, and beautiful well kept grounds.Written 28 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Mad DogOntario, Canada72 contributionsThere is not much left of the original castle but is an incredible site to visit. The views from the high ground is excellent.Written 29 May 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- ThowdmonNewcastle-under-Lyme, UK931 contributionsThe owner (+ family) should be congratulated on the way he has made an obviously family home open to strangers to wander (pry ) round.
Practical point, watch the audio-visual presentation on the web first.
Also, it is worth having a bite at the tea room so you can read the guidebook before going in. Though incidentally the beef sandwich is excellent.
Going round the house was so different to many other places we have visited. The balance between history and a home someone lives in was spot on. Within that we enjoyed the nursery and the tower.Written 15 June 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
