Stefan's Wine and Christmas Paradise Stefan opened his shop, in St. Goar in the middle of the World heritage `Mittelrhein`, over 20 years ago. He is offering delecius Wines and Brandys made from his family. The first and still the most famous Brandy Stefan's family is producing is the peach Brandy. Made out of red peaches which are growing in the vineyards. Whenever you are entering the shop you will be offered a taste of it.: Be careful this Brandy make costumers return from all over the world. Today the variety of Stefan's Brandys got much bigger. The Menu offers something for every taste: from the famous peach Brandy to Blackberry Brandy, from different chocolate Brandys to winter apple brandy even a whisky or a cognac. And not to forget the Queen of the German wines 'Eiswein'. You will find this seldom wine as well in Stefan's shop. Eiswein must be produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine. The sugar and other dissolved solids do not freeze, but the water does, allowing a more concentrated grape. With Eiswein, the freezing happens before the fermentation, not afterwards. Only healthy grapes keep in good shape until the opportunity arises for an Eiswein harvest, which in extreme cases can occur after the New Year, on a northern hemisphere calendar. This gives Eiswein its characteristic refreshing sweetness balanced by high acidity. Eiswein production is risky (the frost may not come at all before the grapes rot or are otherwise lost) and requires the availability of a large enough labor force to pick the whole crop within a few hours, at a moment's notice, on the first morning that is cold enough. This results in relatively small amounts of Eiswein being made world-wide, making Eiswein generally quite expensive. You have some time in St. Goar come in and enjoy a free wine and Brandy tasting. Or enjoy your time browsing through the Christmas shop. You are visiting St. Goar with a group, no problem give a call and we set up a tasting with some snacks for you. Or what do you think of a free tasting at your home? And don't worry when your bottles get empty you can always order online and we ship it directly to your home. And of course we will reimburse your shipping as well when you order online.

We ferried from Bacharach to St. Goar, and found the small bus depot between the river and the main walking street of St. Goar. Taking the bus is about 2 Euros one way. A taxi could be had for twice the amount. If you have time, one could also walk up to the castle.

Rheinfels was once the largest castle along the Rhein region. It was big enough to withstand a 28,000 French army attack in the late 17th century. One of the main reasons it failed, as described on a display in the museum (English and German), is that a master woodturner shot a rifle bullet 200m and severely wounded the French leader, Marshal de Tallard.

Today, there is a hotel, a restaurant and a small museum inside the castle.

Later in the 18th century, the French did manage to take the castle and destroy large parts of the fortification. What you see is just a small part—five times less-- of the gigantic castle that once dominated over the Rhein River. Nevertheless, what you do see is interesting. Also, the views from the castle are magnificent overlooking the village of St. Goar and the Rhein River.

The fee is practically nominal to see the castle. We did enjoy the museum holding various artifacts from this castle which was built in the mid-thirteenth century. There is a model reconstruction inside the museum. At one time the walls were 13 feet thick and the tower 177 feet tall. This castle could hold over 4,000 people during a siege. During peacetime, the castle usually held 300 plus people.

We did not have any time for a tour. But, having a tour would be to your advantage on understanding more about the history and times of Schloss Rheinfels. If you found this review to be “helpful” in any way, please click “Thumbs-up” to let me know.

A modest entrance fee gains you a self tour of the castle which includes some spectacular views.

The patio Cafe overlooking the Rhine will make you swoon. A couple of beers and a pflamkucken along with the view... If you can't leave happy from a visit there, pack it in.

The weather was poor and I am shamed to admit that we drove through the village of Urbar above Sankt Goar and parked close to the Loreleyblick Maria Ruh restaurant. You can join the Rhine Castles trail at this point and visit about 3 viewpoints (there are information boards with maps) without walking far !

Quite a walk but beautiful statue. It is a must see when you are in the Loreley valley. From the camping you have to cross the river with a ferry.

I can't say enough great things about Stefan and his fantastic shop. We have come here time and again over the years, taken all of our visiting friends and family to meet this amazing soul and his incredible wine and wares, and Stefan has gone out of his way every single time to accommodate us even when his store was officially closed! I and my family can't say thank you enough to this wonderful man and his family for providing such a fantastic experience in beautiful Sankt Goar, and we will continue to come here for many years to come!!

We biked along the Rhine and loved it. St. Goar was one of the places we biked through and it was lovely. When in the neighbourhood please visit it.

This is a very small little bar on the grounds outside the Schloss Rheinfels ruins and the adjoining hotel. It is very quaint inside and out, and is a nice place to stop for a beer. It did not seem to be open mid-afternoon, but rather closer to the dinner hour and later. The Gaffel Kölsch was pretty good.

Visited shop as part of Expat Explore tour group. Shop was very attractive, lady in the shop gave explanation of cuckoo clocks and how they are made, and demonstrated several in the shop. Large cuckoo clock outside the shop was not operational when we were there, but the visit was wonderful and would recommend it.
