- Al AHonolulu, HI79 contributionsWhat an amazing experience to see one of the 7 Wonders of Nature. It was sort of a process to set this up. We had to get to the ticket office first thing in the morning, pay for your parking pass as our driver waited while we did the excursion, pay for a tour guide, pay for the boat fee, then wait in the queue for our number to be called. We all noticed the amounts of people that also came in groups to go on this excursion.
By the time our number was called, it was our turn to board the boat. It was only us 4 plus the tour guide and 2 boatmen. It took a short 30 minutes or so to reach the island. From there, we get our life vests and helmets and wait for another boat tour guide to take us on another ride. This time, we set up with self guided audio because noise is refrained while in the caves. There are hundreds of bats that live in captivity, also no one is allowed from touching the interior of the caves to protect the surface from changing colors or conditions.
Most interesting part about the cave was that a lot of the shapes of the stalagmites and stalactites were similar to fruits and vegetables, biblical references, famous people, and just about anything imagined.
Wild monkeys and large lizards roam the island, you're also able to purchase souvenir pictures as a photograph is present. No lunch is served like the other island tours, but it's one of the most fascinating places l've ever been to!Written 13 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - baroomMississauga, Canada2,181 contributionsWe did Joiners Coron Island Super Ultimate Tour with Calamian Islands Travel and Tours on Wed, May 17, and Barracuda Lake was our second stop. The small dock was already packed with tour boats when our boat arrived before 11AM. Our guide announced that our boat cannot get any closer and we have to swim our way here. Boat crew helped everyone go down the boat ladder to the water. Some of us swam while some got pulled by boat crew towards the stone steps. Once on the boardwalk, we then have to climb up and down the wooden stairs single file to reach the platform to Barracuda Lake. The narrow stairs here were built over the rocks, certainly not for the faint at heart, and some steps have old tire treads on them for added safety. Both our seniors (mid-70s) were able to manage the stairs but one of them chose to just sit on a bench when we reached the small wooden platform. To get in the water, one could jump or use the short wooden ladder which have no hand rails. We saw our other senior in the water holding on to a life ring being pulled by our guide and later found her in the shade of a rock overhang, standing on a big rough rock while holding on to the overhang. My family did a little snorkeling here and took videos of the rock formations. When our guide Del noticed we brought an action camera, he joined us and gave us pointers on underwater videos. He suggested that my husband take off his vest and dive next to the rocks while he took underwater videos of him. Del then volunteered to pull each of us a few meters below the surface so we could capture solo videos of us surfacing the water, sort of pretend freediving. Since we were wearing life vests, once he let go, we immediately floated to the surface. I made the mistake of doing a frog kick and it didn't look flattering. Apparently, the thing to remember was to keep the feet together, pointed down, and to not kick. The clear deep waters and rock formations here are indeed perfect for freediving photos and videos. Best to use fins though. We were in the water for about 30 mins before we had to return to the boat. Wish we could have stayed longer.Written 20 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- baroomMississauga, Canada2,181 contributionsThis was sixth and last in the itinerary of our Joiners Coron Island Super Ultimate Tour with Calamian Islands Travel and Tours on Wed, May 17. We were here around 3:30PM. Our tour boat stopped in the outer lagoon some distance away from the rock arch access. Our guide Long then informed everyone that the only options to reach the inner lagoon were to either kayak or swim. Since we rented a 3-person crystal kayak (P1500) for the day, the decision was made for us, we would go kayaking. For our two seniors (mid-70s), swimming to the inner lagoon was too physically demanding and both decided to stay on the boat.
Once again, I sat in the middle of the crystal kayak while my son and my husband occupied the front and rear, respectively. My two paddlers did a good job and were able to manoeuvre our kayak beneath the low rock arch without a hitch. It was an adventure passing underneath this natural arch and I got it all on video. I noticed in the video that we instinctively ducked our heads as we were passing through because it looked like we might bang our heads if we didn't do so--the arch ceiling seemed a bit too low for comfort. A friend told me that when her family went on a private tour, their guide made them float face up single file, holding onto the feet of the person ahead of them, while he slowly pulled them using a life ring underneath the rock arch. It's plain that we both visited Twin Lagoon during low tide. If it were high tide, the kayak would be useless as the water would submerge the arch ceiling. No wonder there are wooden ladders on both sides of the rock arch. During high tide, visitors are expected to climb over the arch to reach the inner lagoon. From the looks of it, obviously not for the faint of heart.
Anyway, we kayaked around the lagoon and I was able to take photos and videos of our secluded surroundings. One of the boat crew members on another kayak offered to take our photo so I handed the action camera to him. We were getting ready to return to the tour boat when, to our surprise, we saw our two seniors in the water with our guide Del. Both were calmly holding onto a life ring while Del casually pulled them around. Our tour boat stayed here at Twin Lagoon for about an hour before it was time to return to Coron Town dock.Written 22 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. The view up the top is amazing :)
Average fitness needed. The concrete steps are all in tack with steel rails either side so very safe. If you can and have the time while staying in Coron it’s a must do. We went in the afternoon on a hot day and it was a little difficult to relax when outside was hot and the water was hot. Maybe better in the early evening. The ride to get there from the town was 700 pesos on a trike and very bumpy. The entrance fee was 300 pesos and they charged my 11 year old the adult price not the student price. Kids pricing is only up to 10 years.Written 27 October 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- baroomMississauga, Canada2,181 contributionsWe did Joiners Island Escapade Tour (P1700/person) with Calamian Islands Travel and Tours on Thu, May 18, and Malcapuya Island was our first stop. The island was some distance away and the boat trip took about 1.5 hours. We got here before 10:30AM. The beach is a short trek across the island from the boat docking area. There are no directional signs, just a dirt trail to follow. Pretty soon the scenery changes to tall coconut trees, white picnic tents, sand, sea and sky. The boat crew led our tour group to the tents on the left side. My group of five (three adults and two seniors, mid-70s) picked the tent that was closest to the fresh "buko" (young coconut) stand. Toilet facilities are conveniently located along the beach--two rustic toilet rooms equipped with pour-flush toilet, "tabo" (dipper) and "timba" (water bucket).
The beach here at Malcapuya Island is absolutely world-class! Powdery white sand, clear blue waters... a tropical paradise! As I was admiring the top-notch scenery and taking photos, young boat crew member Nelson offered to take photos so my son went with him for a beach photo shoot. Next on the agenda was the boat-pulled (P100/person) snorkeling activity. Since my family of 3 signed up for it back at Coron town dock, we got ready with snorkels and masks and followed our guide Jigs to the beach. Jigs was not happy with the small boat operator for taking a different group just as we arrived on the island. He said our tour group should have been prioritized due to a long-standing arrangement. The boat returned to shore around 11AM and we were asked to hold on to ropes that were horizontally attached to the outriggers. We were pulled slowly in the water and were soon looking at different corals and fish beneath us. At one point the boat stopped so we could do fish feeding. I wasn't expecting so many hungry fish to converge on a cracker I was holding and demolish it in a matter of seconds. It was such a cool experience! We quickly realized that the black fish bites. Our fingers definitely felt a nibble or two from these critters. The fish feeding made our day. We were at it for maybe 5 mins and then we continued our easy and lazy snorkeling all the way back to shore.
While the boat crew was busy getting the buffet table ready, we went to buy some fresh "buko" (P50 each). The vendor expertly cut the young coconuts--he did it so quickly that by the time I brought out my phone to take a video he was already passing them around. A bald, old man joined us and insisted that I take a photo of him with my husband while they each held a "buko." I didn't want to but finally took one photo just to appease this stranger. No idea who he was, probably saw himself as a local celebrity, but the encounter was really weird.
Our buffet spread this time consisted of grilled "tulingan" (bullet tuna), grilled pork, mixed vegetables, sauteed shrimps, cucumber salad, "ensaladang lato" (seaweed salad), steamed rice, cut watermelon and ripe papaya and bottles of cold water. While we enjoyed our lunch, a young mongrel dog wandered into our tent and kept making those puppy-dog eyes so we gave him some pork scraps from our plates.
Overheard someone from our tour group loudly complaining to our guide about the small boat. She brought small kids and was apparently expecting a glass bottom boat ride. An unrealistic expectation as our guide never said anything about a glass bottom boat ride. But a good business idea for Calamian Islands Travel and Tours to consider for Malcapuya Island. By the time we finished lunch, we were only able to fit in a quick "human drone" video shoot with Nelson and then we all had to return to the tour boat. Wish we could have stayed longer in beautiful Malcapuya Island. We left around 12:55PM.Written 29 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
