Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited with my wife. This is a vast gallery with a mass of exhibitions cataloguing Australian art through the ages. Incredibly interesting and a real joy to see. Allow yourself plenty of time!

We enjoyed the hour spent at this exhibition. It is well designed and provides a glimpse into the history of the ship and the lives of the people on this tragic voyage. We booked a 10.30 tour, and as previously mentioned by others it was too busy. I would recommend trying an early morning or late afternoon timeslot to see if this makes a difference to the number of people. It was difficult to read/view every item properly, but we still enjoyed our visit.

One of the best things we did in Melbourne. Kids loved it. The pictures turned out amazing. Would 100 percent recommend.

Amazing experience to get in the acmi Museum. We booked the laser feast exhibition: works of nature and the images and little films blew our minds. It was interactive too, started with a meditation on really comfy couches, followed by relaxing walks through images with evolving trees and all kinds of nature. Recommended to book the VR experience too!

We started with a coffee then onto the MCG tour. 90 minutes of behind the scenes stories, anecdotes & pure history. Our guide, John, like all guides is a volunteer member of the Melbourne Cricket Club. He was very knowledgeable and witty.

Our day was 34 degrees so guides were excused from jackets, only wearing ties.

Then a free ice cream for the kids and down into the (air conditioned) museum. It is a great collecting of memorabilia, film, photos and sound.

There’s lots of fun interactive stuff for the kids of all ages.

Volunteer guides know their stuff and have stories you’d never hear anywhere else.

We spent 3 hours on both but could easily have spent hours more.

The museum is very accessible for any mobility level with lifts, ramps etc .

The MCG tour is suitable for likitwd endurance etc with gentle slopes, elevators and escalators. There are some gentle stairs, but I’m sure they are avoidable.

This was the second time I visited the museum - first time was about 10 years ago. I suggested to my family the visit. We all enjoyed interactive displays specifically with regards to changes of immigration policy in Australia and support to diversity and inclusion.
The staff of the museum is very knowledgeable and friendly.
    Absolutely recommend visiting

Visited Federation Square initially to visit the National Art Gallery extension. Very interesting display of cultural art and well worth a visit. The square itself is full of wonderful eateries, and shops. Whilst we were there they also had an African food and craft market, where we enjoyed some very tasty food. At night the Christmas display was amazing.

While visiting Melbourne for first time, stopped by for a visit in late afternoon. The painting focused on Australian artist which was pretty interesting, since I had not much experienced Australian paintings in US or European art museums. The visit was enjoyable while the building was very modern. I actually thought it was a better experience than the NGV International which was surprising for me.

We had such a wonderful experience at The Lume, it was our first visit but certainly won't be the last, the experience was just phenomenal. The place was so lovely to visit, it was nice and clean and spacious, they didn't overcrowd it, which I was a bit worried about. The staff were so incredibly helpful and lovely. We aren't typically art gallery people but we had such a great time we'll absolutely be going again! Highly recommend

My wife and I stopped in here on a short trip to Melbourne. This is a well-done history museum in what used to be the treasure building. There are numerous displays depicting the history of Melbourne as well as detailed descriptions of the gold rush and the impact it had on the city's grown, population, etc. The gold rush history includes the interaction and effect on the indigenous people. About half of the displays are in the old vaults on the lower level...pretty cool to see those and the living quarters that had been there. This was a fun find and a great way to spend an hour or two.

From the private collection of Mr Johnston donated to the Heritage Trust. A lovely insight into the household items that were used to entertain or decorate a home from a Jacobite cupboard in the kitchen to chandeliers and tea sets and other associated stuff in all the rooms of this double terrace house. he was an antique dealer travelling between the UK, India, China and Australia. A nice way to spend 2.5 hours

Our tour guide was fabulous. Very knowledgeable and generous in sharing that, and answering any questions we had. We learnt so much and our knowledge of Aboriginal culture and history was expanded vastly. We also learnt more about the Yarra River and that the MCG was the meeting place of the 5 tribes of the Kulin nation. The whole experience was awesome

Though not my first visit to this museum, its always worth a visit periodically as the displays are changed on a regular basis.
Three floors plus the basement are housed in an historic building, itself very well built and maintained (with a timber staircase easily the best built we have come across), though there is a good sized elevator for those requiring it.
The top floor contained displays (both static and audio-visual) about the Chinese people who emigrated to Australia from goldfield days to present day. The basement contains a very good interactive display regarding the first chinese (men) to leave their homeland, sailing to Australia to pan for gold.

When the Polly Woodside was launched in 1885, she was the last of a dying breed. This hardy steel-hulled sailing ship was made for hauling cargo, with a hard-working crew to man her. The men who crewed these tall ships worked hard for their money. The Polly Woodside is moored on South Wharf, you can get a good view from outside.
