Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Amazing work by volunteers has created a beautiful garden with an array of flowering shrubs, established trees annuals and wildflowers.
The cemetery is more like a botanical garden and would rival any that the regions have on offer.

We were staying on Bolton street so saw this from our window. Interesting history as it was cut in 2 in 1970s by the motorway construction… you can visit the various parts. Check out the Jewish section and the grave of the 5 Duff children who all sadly died of diphtheria within 11 days. You can walk up through it to the Botanical garden. I loved it. They have complimentary maps.

Lovely little old historic cemetery. If you're interested in these, then worth having a look at. Easily accessible (right next to the Gondola) and some good photographic opportunities if that's your thing.

I was very keen to see the Northern Cemetry after I'd heard about the devastating loss of so many historic roses a few years ago, but the Otago Heritage Rose Group have done an unbelievably great job restoring the history and atmosphere in this gem, high in the hills overlooking the city. December was a wonderful time to see the old roses wind their way around the historic monuments to our pioneering past. Many old families, like the Larnachs and Thomas Bracken (of National anthem fame) rest here amongst the ancient trees and beautiful headstones.. and the lovely information sheets, help one to find their way around- I could have stayed all day.

We spent approximately half an hour on this cemetery- it is clean, has very old graves (most of them more then 100yrs. old), nice flowers every here and there and birdsounds everywhere...a very peaceful spot to spend some quiet time at.

Beautiful cemetery, but unfortunately it's in shambles at present. It could be due to the recent cyclone - which has taken out some of the nature tail that connects to the cemetery.

Went here to track down my Great Grandfather and a few other blasts from the past. The office was most helpful, and provided a map with directions to find the areas I was seeking.

Also was able to find new information, as one of the graves I sought was a "double decker" with my ancestor downstairs and a more recently bereaved relative interred above.

If you have any history here, then worth spending an hour or two.

Ther are some very old plots here to be discovered. They have some of the most spectacular views in the Corromandels.

It was a 21km walking loop with 750 metres of uphill. We did the lookout extension between orongo bay and russell - but i dont recommend it as a must do.

the section from paihia to opua goes along rocks and boardwalks. it needs to be low or a few hours either side of low tide. it winds in and out of bays. its not well marked after the bridge and then follow the trail and turn right about ten metres after the white fence.
the boardwalks along the trail are great and its very diverse from coastal, to lovely forest, raupo, mangroves. the last 8km was a disappointing as it seemed to lose the trail and we were walking beside a road, or a scramble up a fenceline.

Enjoyed lunch in Russell and then ferry back to Paihia. i recommend the walk for any moderate fitness and its a great way to see the area

Such a peaceful and beautiful site for a cementary. A quick walk from Gore Bay along the beach and winding up the hill. Well worth a visit.

Just went to visit some relatives and WOW. So much glorious colour. The planting is coming along and already looks fabulous. Such a lovely peaceful place to wander.

Hawkes Bay pioneers are mostly in one place! I’d just been t9 Otaki Cemetary and was fascinated to find William Colenso’s wife Elizabeth there. I’ll try and attach a photo of her Otaki Grave as she links with HB and this Cemetery.

I spend a great deal of time in cemeteries because I take photos for the Billion Graves Project, I am always looking for family graves or I am geocaching. I found this cemetery to be very tranquil and well-maintained, unlike some of the cemeteries I have visited.

I found this wonderful heritage site listed as part of the brochure "Explore Wellington: city to sea walkway" I obtained from the isite. Because we were staying at the Travelodge, we were able to walk up plimmers steps and follow the roads up to the cemetery using the map in that brochure plus other area maps. The Catholic cemetery is a protected heritage site, with many graves of maritime personalities and and church folk. We climbed all the way to the top where the largest headstone and plot turned out to be a group plot for priests enclosed by wrought iron with climbing roses and a bed of white bleached shells. Beautiful. And from up here, as well as lower in the cemetery, you get great views out over the city. I expect you could drive her via the roads in the University then walk down from the top to make it easier. If you're a fan of historic cemeteries as I am then this is a much more atmospheric destination than the Bolton St Cemetery (separate review), but complements it nicely with it's different range of "residents" and the catholic and maritime flavour.

Lovely old, classic, peaceful cemetery. It's surprisingly large. Many of the graves date from the late 1800s. The grounds are well kept.
