What a great place to spend an afternoon! Even though it was an overcast day the scenery and gardens were spectacular. It was autumn and the changing colours are amazing, a sight I dont see as I live in the top part of the North Island where its too warm. I started with a toasted Reubens sandwich from Ilex Cafe which I had with a takeaway cuppa under a massive tree canopy while i tead my book. Then after a look through the shop I hopped on an electric car for an hour long drive through the gardens. The driver, Karen, was so friendly and informative. I'm glad I took the tour as the gardens are huge and at 72 I doubt I would have been able to walk even one quarter of it! After a cup of tea back at Ilex Cafe I visited the hothouse for a stunning display of colorful plants. Make sure you have a camera handy - I took so many photos! I thoroughly recommend the Botanic Gardens and would love to come again during different seasons.

This was fun and we liked the tram museum which was free. Then it’s a nice walk down through the botanical gardens - nice roses

We are travelling around the world two months in. We are staying in Christchurch for a few days so wanted to cram as much in as possible including spending a few hours here.
We visited their other attraction yesterday the tram that takes you around the city showing you places of interest etc.
The cable car up to the top was magnificent with breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
The staff were amazing too both at the kiosk and on the cable car.
We would walked a couple of the paths too which gave us even more views of the surrounding area.

The Center was very interesting. There was a lot to see. I really enjoyed the VIP Penguin session-got to see the penguins and learn more about them. Also loved the Husky dogs lounging around waiting for people to pet them. Highly recommend.

Well worth the entrance fee, an insight into how awful and life changing earthquakes can be and the devastation it brought to this city.
Lots of information and pictures and also first hand knowledge from the staff regarding the 2011 quake. Good to hear how they have learned from the experience and how building techniques have changed for the better for the future. A tram tour of the city makes you realise about the destruction and how they are rebuilding for the future.

We spent several hours walking on the wooden and dirt paths slowly throughout the park. What a delight it was! There are birds everywhere. And not just sparrows. There are attractive and easy to read signs all over the place detailing the unique animal species that are located at Willowbank. There are pond areas and water areas everywhere.

It was a delight to see the children feeding the eels as soon as you walk into the park after paying admission. We caught the latter part of the magic show and loved it. There is a small little-used lunch area with picnic tables behind the magic show, and adjoining the toilets.

A great place for families. Easy to walk. Children love the smaller and larger animals, Especially the birds that are often roaming freely.

You can purchase a bag of small food to feed the birds and also a different bag of larger food pellets to feed the larger animals such as the deer. Make sure to purchase these small white bags when you buy your admission as they are not available elsewhere in the park.

And, yes, we were able to spot two kiwis in the darkened kiwi shelter. It was magical.

Thank you, Willowbank, for a delightful day. Please give me a link if you find this review helpful. You can also look for reviews that I have written for Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington as well as Brisbane.

This is one of the largest parks in the world and is larger than London’s Hyde Park but smaller than New York’s Central Park. It hosts a variety of features from botanical gardens, public golf course, international cricket venue to open spaces for families and people who want to exercise.
Each Saturday morning, it hosts the local parkrun and it is an excellent event. It is very inclusive and is open to everyone regardless of ability.

We went with family in April 2023 and there was something for everyone to do. A must see for a wet day. Adults and children enjoyed the tour at the museum with the volunteers. We also particularly loved the flight simulator.

Within an easy drive from Christchurch, this is a very beautiful area, especially as you approach Akaroa. The road winds across the hills in a series of zigzags with great view all around. Little River is a great place to stop along the way.

My 3 year old loved this playground and found plenty to do!
There's definitely a few pieces of equipment better suited to older kids but we managed 90mins here and still had to pry our daughter away at lunch time!
The food trucks are brilliant and offer parents and caregivers a coffee or snack.
A bit of shade might be nice especially during sunnier days!

My son and I went on the tour by John, and were shown lots of ingenious gadgets for improving life and overcoming obstacles in colonial NZ llife. John was knowledgeable and charming, bringing the house and it's pioneering inhabitants to life. Great tour thanks!
