What travellers are saying
- Phayao13Stockholm, Sweden7,608 contributionsThe historical part of Riga is surprisingly large, several tourist attractions, restaurants in most price ranges. Museums and of course the disgusting souvenir shops. This offseason it feels peaceful and there are hardly any crowds at the museum or the restaurants.Considering how many bars we pass, I understand how a summer can be tiring for you.Written 18 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - mwg_scotlandEdinburgh, UK17 contributionsTypical big local market, it was close to our hotel so we spent a couple of hours there. - Ac646518 contributionsThis is a lovely house which is a worth a wander round
The downstairs cellar part was the most interesting. It’s a very spacious museum which is great so it didn’t feel overcrowded
It’s worth visiting if you have an hour to kill but not the most informative museumWritten 17 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews. - danLondon, UK25 contributionsA no holds barred look at what happened to Latvians during Soviet Russia.
The museum not only told the story of some of the many thousands of Latvians that went through the building on their way to not being seen again, but also called out those in the KGB who carried out the horrendous acts.
It is well worth paying the extra for the tour, which takes you away from the main exhibition hall and down into the depths of the building. Seeing the cells, kitchen and “exercise area” really brings the story to light. As was the last room, which I will not spoilt for you.
Visit here in conjunction with the occupation museum to really open your eyes up to Russia and her actions.Written 14 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It is very well laid out, lots of information, you'll never read it all! History of the different occupations of Latvia, it's people and the forced deportation, imprisonment or joining of the armies/sides. Horrific atrocities and stories about individuals or families. Sad. Thought provoking, another example of how people have been persecuted.

- Jake CGreater Manchester, UK788 contributionsThe church is free to enter, but you have to pay €9 to go up the church tower. We thought this was a bit steep, but to be fair you can see the whole of Riga from the top of the tower.

- Phayao13Stockholm, Sweden7,608 contributionsHere they find one grandiose building after another. Even the wonder that some seem completely abandoned to their fate.Finish with a museum visit, where you get to step inside and see an apartment from the inside of the buildings.Written 18 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Phayao13Stockholm, Sweden7,608 contributionsPassed by in the evening when the cathedral was completely turned off, not a single light. The following day (Sunday) there was mass and the impression was massive and bustling with life. The neo-Byzantine style building was the most expensive edifice of that time in Riga, its interior was uniquely rich and of high artistic value. Flashy, sumptuous is an impression that sticks in the retina. The vestments of the clergy are astonishing. The church is full of icons and images.Written 18 March 2025This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Jason SMelbourne, Australia2,666 contributionsVery big monument that you will come across while walking around Riga, just near the main city park.
Great to see with the significance to the local people with their struggles for freedom over many centuries.
