Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Fremantle Prison has a very interesting history to explore - certainly opt for one of the tours that is of interest. We opted for the history tour exploring the beginnings of the prison. Great to see so much still intact and the prison being upgraded to show the 'back to the beginnings' style of cells etc.

Great service, efficient and friendly staff. Easy half hour trip over to beautiful Rottnest island where we hired bikes and easily rode around to four different beaches.

Really enjoyed our visit to the Museum. We did the submarine tour which having never been we .enjoyed. But our guide was very rude throughout the trip . Felt we were being told off throughout the tour.

We took the train from Perth and wandered around the markets which was extremely crowded. There are lots of food vendors and we picked a Greek one and managed to find someplace outdoors to eat. The markets are selling all kinds of goods and we bought some gifts.

We also wandered around Fremantle which was a nice place to visit.

Fantastic free museum with some interesting excellent exhibits about multiple Dutch shipwrecks off the WA coast in the 1600’s (including the Batavia) as well as the Dutch mariners that came ashore in the 1600s. Incredible that this is not taught as part of the Education curriculum in the Eastern States of Australia where it’s all about Cook and Flinders. We spent 2 hours there but could have spent a bit longer.

Rottnest Island is beautiful, calm and photogenic. Every one arrives to this island happy, joyful, relaxing and fun. Little did we know the island's dark history and sad stories. The lady in the museum told us the things happened in the past and the knowledge makes the island more meaningful to visit. November is the month for the breeding of bush flies. They just surround us and poke into our eyes, nostril and mouth for moisture. The quokkas are friendly and cute.

We had a lovely couple of hours here to finish off a great day trip to Freemantle.
Superb selection of craft beers and a lovely airy setting. Loved the massive vats snd pipes of the brewery as a backdrop
Very friendly staff, so full of good cheer and advice on what to try.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it without hesitation.

Wonderful welcome by enthusiastic volunteers who explained the whole history. Small place with quite steep steps but it is definitely worth going too to hear the tales and see the Wonderful views.

Spent many days on this beach during my stay. Always plenty of space even on busy days. Very clean and great for walking along waters edge from end to end. Plenty of parking and a great cafe where you can get ices, coffees and breakfast.
Backed by sand dunes and green space, there’s plenty of room to have your picnic, play games or chill and watch the sunset.
Located next to dog beaches too.

Went camping on Rottnest in May and June 2024 (late autumn and winter). It was a wonderful experience both times because...

    1. It is much quieter in the off season, especially mid-week.
    2. The weather can be amazing for non-swimming related activities such as riding your bike around the island; walking or running on the amazing trails; going on some of the great history related tours; just chilling out in a peaceful environment.
    3. There is everything you need on the island. The general store has everything you could want, and the bakery has a big range of nice things to eat.

I have been going to the island for more than 30 years, and you can see the constant effort being made to refurbish it and add facilities.

    The downsides:
    1. Some things can be expensive, because everything must be brought from the mainland., so camping is a good budget option.
    2. Some of the accommodation can be on the rustic side, which is a good reason to bring your tent.
    3. There are building works going on in several places around the island, including around the main settlement.
    4. The kitchen at the campground is a little rundown and needs cleaning; It would be really helpful if it had some cheap plates, cutlery, pots and pans, and cleaning products. The camping ground could do with more bins. The ablution block is a little dirty and the lights didn't work in the men's side. Some complementary clothes pegs would be good.

--- The Verdict on Camping at Rottnest in Winter ---
It is an overwhelming yes if you like walking, running, cycling, nature and decoupling from the hectic life on the mainland. (Also fishing, surfing, swimming if you are keen).
