The Medina of Fez is said to be the largest in the world with a staggering 9000 alleyways in which to get lost. Started in the 9th century most of the growth occurred in the 12th and 13th centuries. Madrasas, fondouks, mosques, and palaces as well as the souks can all be found here. Be prepared to get lost as you explore!!

To get to see the place, you need to enter some house, that will probably be a shop with leather products, and walk up the stairs to a terrace to see the tannery down below. I have heard that some buildings/shops ask you for some money, others will just try to convince you to buy something.
The view at the tannery is actually not that wow, you won't learn anything about leather processing itself. But you can stick around for a bit and watch people working down there.
The place stinks. Some people carry mint leaves with them to manage the smell. I believe they get them either from their tour guides, or in some shop that they used to get up to some terrace.

We were only able to see the central plaza because this edifice is undergoing repairs and restorations. Despite its beauty, this region only makes up a minor portion of the complex.

This is the old medina with parts dating back to the 11th century. Full of narrow alleyways and loads of market stalls. Well worth a visit.

This impressive gate dates to 1913 and is on the western side of the medina. Also known as the blue gate of Fez. A great display of neo-moorish architectural style.

The "Wood Museum" was originally a traditional funduq (caravanserai). It has beautiful tiled fountain outside at the entrance. Inside, the building is centered around a main rectangular courtyard, surrounded by a three-story structure, each with different rooms. There is lots of intricately carved woodwork throughout. The ground floor rooms were used to store merchandise (now museum displays), while the upper floors were for overstaying guests. If you appreciate fine woodwork and carvings, this is a great place to visit.

This mosque in the heart of the medina was once one of the oldest university's in the world founded in 859. As a working mosque you cannot enter if you are not Muslim but can appreciate the grandeur through the large doorway.

This is the area where the leather tannery coop is located surrounded by an abundance of leather stores. They give you a mint leaf to counters act the smell of the bird poop they use in the tanning process.
