Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Visited with wife and son. Very busy on a Sunday with lots of students and promising graduates taking photos all over the site. There were lots to see and my 9 year old son made his own print. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

I visted the Hoa Lo Prison. First, the good. I learned so much about the French occupation and the following repression of the Vietnamese Rebles. Now the bad. The American Vietnam War section was not balanced. I would say the museum did not address the harsh treatment of American POWs, but nor did I expect it to shine a light on that dark history.

This was my second visit to Hanoi, however both times I didn't manage to see Mr. Ho Chi Minh's body in his Mausoleum, but was around in front and on other sites around the complex.
So basically, you're reading tips from a traveler who didn't make it inside, but for sure will next time :-)
HCM Mausoleum is within a huge space with several another sites.
When entering the area you pass an airport style security check. After that you can roam freely exploring the area. You need around 2 hours min for that, excluding the Mausoleum, which visit length depends on the queueing line.

Besides the Mausoleum within the complex is the Presidential Palace, One Pillar Pagoda, HCM stilt house and a Museum (small entry fees for the latter two).
People here review and post pics of all these together, but I'll focus on the Mausoleum, while others you can read in respective reviews.

My previous visit in 2017 was during some Vietnam holidays, so the waiting line in front was very long, some 2+ hours as I was told by police, so I gave up.
This year, in Jan 2024 I put it high on my to do list saving our last day only for that.
Unfortunately, I did not know the Mausoleum is NOT open every day. It's open only 4 days a week and some of these days only 8-11 AM. So, inform yourself beforehand if you want to enter it and see Mr. HCM body.
All other attractions on the premises are open every day, so you still have plenty to visit.

The church was huge and majestic. It stands so well aside from the normal buildings around it. We don’t get to enter as it was closed during our time. The architecture is gothic in its own way.

Huyen Travel put together day trips to Halong Bay and Ning Binh, plus plane tickets to HCMC. The day trips far exceeded expectations. Highly recommended.

Presidential Palace is situated on the premises of HCM Mausoleum area - a huge complex with several attractions within it.
The Palace itself is very beautiful painted in vivid yellow with red tiles roof. It was built in 1900's for the French Governor of Indochina. Later, the resident was Mr. HCM and nowadays it houses the Vietnam President.
Unfortunately you cannot visit the Palace, it's only for officials.

DO NOT be confused with many reviewers here writing about and posting pics of visit. This is for the Stilt House HCM used, which is 5 min walk away and open for visits with a small fee.

Ngoc Son Temple is located on a small island on Hoan Kiem Lake in the very center of Hanoi. It's reachable via a small picturesque bridge paying a small fee.
Temple is quite ordinary, like many others we saw all over Vietnam, however its position on the lake is so beautiful and that's the reason it's so popular.
Come at night as well, when it's beautifully illuminated.

The weather was very cold but atmosphere was very cool. We love walking on narrow but clean brick-paved roads in Duong Lam ancient village. And ride a bike is very interesting, too. But I am not a good biker. hahaha.

Pretty worthwhile. Go with a guide who will take you halfway out on bridge for a selfie. The bridge played an important part in Hanois development and was bombed many times during the war.
Built by same guy that built the Eiffel Tower.

It’s a street full of clothing shops and restaurants. Nothing too survey in my opinion.

I learned that each street in the area is named after a certain item sold like silk, fish sauce, goat meat, flowers, etc.

That round have been helpful for me to know ahead of time side I only had short window of time to find pure silk. Most stores sold silk blend- whatever that means.

the pagoda is cool to see, I didn't bother to go up the steps due to the heat and the line. in the vicinity is another temple which is very ornate and great for some pix. don't miss these since it's right in the area with the mausoleum.
