Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

    It's a beautiful place.
Mosque, church, museum all in one place.
It is one of the places that everyone who goes to Istanbul should visit.

When I heard that it had been renovated, I wanted to see it again. I really liked the new version. The lights were very attractive and gave it a new atmosphere. It is a nice place to visit.

Visited as part of a tour. It's beautiful and something not to miss when in Istanbul. Just be sure to wear conservative clothes - no shorts guys, and ladies you'll need a scarf, covered shoulders and covered legs. Totally worth it.

This is a big site with some truly spectacular ruins. It was quite crowded when we were there, but the crowds did not get in the way. There's a separate area inside the site that requires a separate ticket, and the area offers a walk through a variety of "homes". It's different and very worthwhile, but there's a lot of stair climbing so don't pay for a ticket unless you are in good shape.

This is a must do. The Palace grounds are beautifully maintained and cool on a hot day. The displays of weapons and treasure, and the relics are extremely interesting.

Most important, get here early! Especially if there's cruise ships in port.

The second mosque that we went to in the old city. It’s a bit of a walk across the old city to get there but worth the walk. The grounds outside are just as amazing as the inside of the mosque. It felt larger than the Blue Mosque but also it wasn’t busy as its not as famous. However the inside is beautiful and décor is ornate. Add it to your list but remember dress code and check prayer times. We did both the Blue Mosque and Sulamaniye in the same morning.

Travelled to Istanbul end of Feb

We love the old Sultanahmet area. It's our 4th visit.
If you want to see the tourist sights, mosques, grand bazaar etc you must stay in this area.
It's a beautiful area filled with cobbled streets, beautiful mosques, bazaars, street vendors etc...
Access around the area & towards other parts of Istanbul are easily available via the tram system. The marmary trains and buses are very efficient as well. Buy a travel card called the Istanbul Card. 1 card can be used by multiple members of the family.
The grand bazaar is a must, busy and not for the faint hearted but a labyrinth of shops, alleys all tantalising the eyes, nose and taste buds.
Visit the Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque, The Topkapi palace, and many more beautiful tourist attractions.
There's lots of different accommodation types from tiny 3* hotels to opulent 5* hotels. I recommend you choose a hotel close to a tram station due to the amount of walking you will be doing.
Make sure you bring comfortable shoes as there's ALOT of walking. Be mindful that taxi's cannot enter the road alongside the blue mosque so trams are the main mode of transport. We rarely used taxi's as we prefer the tram & buses.
Food is amazing in this area. Something for every budget. Do try the delicious Simit, sweetcorn & chestnuts from the street vendor carts. A must is dessert, Baklava or kunafe from the famous Hafiz Mustafa dessert chain.
We cannot wait for our next visit

All the hotels and travel agents will try to see you a tour on the Bosphorus but if you just want a simple 90 minute tour up and down with no frills you can save yourself loads by going down to the Emiminou dock area and buying a ticket there for about 150 TRY. The boat was comfortable, there was an English audio commentary and all the sights were included but without paying £20 for the pleasure.
