Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I loved this church: it shows all the opulence of the catholic faith in a very good way.
I was mainly drawn from the exterior that is so different from the surrounding churches (and I love the exterior even more than the interior)
I was a bit disappointed because you are not allowed to take pictures (but I had to sneak one, sorry!) but the church is amazingly glorious with the gold gleaming in the sun coming from the top windows. Of course you just wonder around taking everything in and I find it relaxing not to have to focus on unmissable art (like the churches in Italy) and just enjoy your surroundings.

Sitting in the square by the San Francisco Church was a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Lots of street food on offer , the devil preaching ! Wedding parties and children having a great time.
People watching with a coffee and there was a fantastic atmosphere

The Basilica was the start of our walking tour of the Old Town. The art and history of this church are fascinating. But the best fun was being able to climb the infrastructure and see both the interior and out to the rooftop and amazing views of Quito. If you are already a little breathless from the city altitude, there is an elevator. There are also shops and rest stops on a few floors.

It was a wonderful experience visiting this World Heritage Place. It is a remarkable example of colonial architecture and art in Ecuador. The church is adorned with impressive paintings, sculptures and altar pieces that reflect the artistic diversity of the Quito School. The Basilica and convent of San Francisco de Quito is a must-see for anyone interested in the history and heritage of Ecuador.

La Mitad del Mundo is an emblematic monument located on the outskirts of the city of Quito, Ecuador. The monument itself consists of a large stone structure representing the equator and is topped by a giant globe. Visitors can stand on the line marked on the ground, which represents the division between the two hemispheres, and take pictures on one side of the world and the other. In addition to the monument in the surrounding area you'll find a museum called the "Intiñan Solar Museum," which offers interactive and educational exhibits on natural phenomena that occur in the equatorial region, as well as experiments related to gravity and location on the equator. It's an interesting place to learn about Ecuador's geography and culture, and to experience the curiosities that occur at the equator, such as the ability to balance eggs on a nail or the deflection of water in different hemispheres.

While the statue is what is highlighted here the views are what are most breathtaking from my perspective. Sure, look at and enjoy the statute but you will spend more time looking at the surrounding areas from this viewpoint.

Such a peaceful (well it was peaceful at 9,30 am!) square with a nice balance of buildings on the sides (especially il Palacio de Gobierno) and the lovely statue in the middle…all very balanced indeed!!!
I loved the little manicured gardens and the trees that provide a nice shade. A rather grand square in the little old town.

Very interesting street. However, confine yourself to this street and don’t go at night. We ended up in a very sketchy area and it wasn’t that late.

Visited as part of our Quito city tour, the tour guide warned us that the hike up the hill was unsafe day and night. The vantage point gives great panoramic views of the city, there a couple of stalls and a small museum with a nominal admission charge.
The structure is the tallest aluminium statue in the world and is actually taller than Christ the Redeemer in Rio.

The Palace has still not reopened for tours. The changing of the guard now happens on Tuesday at noon and is definitely worth seeing.

This is a the biggest square. I think, in Old Quito (certainly feels that way) with Iglesia Y Convent de San Francisco occupying the upper part of the square itself. Unfortunately during my visit the church was covered in scaffolding and that broke the simmetry of the overall view but still walking at the top of the square and looking down you can feel the airiness of the place. Lovely sight!

Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito (Spanish: Catedral Metropolitana de Quito), known simply as la Catedral, is the Catholic cathedral in Quito, Ecuador. Located on the Plaza de la Independencia (La Plaza Grande), it served as a seat of the Diocese of Quito from 1545 until 1848 when it was elevated to Archdiocese. In 1995, it was elevated to the Cathedral of Ecuador, making it the seniormost Catholic church in the country.

During our tour with Manta Tour Guides, we drove to Montecristi, the home and burial place of the much-loved President Fernando Villavicencio. Some insurrectionists who did not like the changes he was making assassinated him and then dragged his body through the streets. There is a mural of him and his accomplishments near the Nuestra Madre de Monserrate Cathedral. The Minor Basilica of the Virgin of Monserrat located in Montecristi was built in the year 1959-1962

Chapels are located around the edge of the basilica's interior. Perhaps the most important section is the location of the Black Madonna. Sometimes referred to as the Virgin of Montserrat and La Moreneta, the statue is located above the main altar behind a sheet of glass in what is called the "throne room". There is also a stairway to the throne room for those who wish to pray there.

The interior of the cathedral is white including the tall arches. Stained-glass windows surrounded the altar and on both sides of the church. On one side of the nave is a Christ laying in a glass-enclosed case and covered with a white silk cloth. The entrance doors were enormous and made of a beautiful wood. Next to the side of the basilica is a small park with a fountain. Take time to visit this beautiful cathedral.

Very few people visit this church compared to the Jesus Compania one but they are missing out. It is not as blingtastic as others but the interior of painted pillars and domed ceilings is still beautiful to see and it does have a high golden altar.
It is in the main plazza area and is free to enter (just be careful there is no service in progress) and well worth a look.

The train company has different options. For short trips take the Cotopaxi one day tour. But the best is the Nariz del Diablo option. For that you will have to spend one or two nights in different towns at typical and historical haciendas. The trip is totally safe and worth it. Lots of great views of the Andes. Don't miss the "choclo y hablas" corn in the cob and lima beans at the station. A must if you are into typical food.
