I see little point comparing it to Dubrovnik - it is a different place altogether. an old walled town with a maze of streets and small squares. a variety of shops - some artisan, some selling fakes, some selling overpriced jewellery (always look closely with a loupe), some touristy and some nice. Also has bars and churches. Set within Kotor which is a beautiful place. Yes there are some less attractive bits but it is a living place that people live in and not just a museum for tourists. All cities have good and less good bits. This one happens to be at the base of a wonderfully beautiful fjord.

The bay of Kotor is simply amazing with it's clear waters and views from the sea or land, everything looks great and if you can go into the clear waters makes it even better. If you can, go on the speed boats tour and it will be an incredible experience.

Not nearly as spectacular as those of Dubrovnik, but they are one of the main attractions of Kotor. It is worth visiting, a walk on the walls is free and offers you beautiful views of the area. They are not very well maintained by the local authorities.

The road to the mountain leads along the Kotor serpentine. The viewpoint is very beautiful, there is a view of Kotor and Tivat. There is plenty of room to park and take a picture - much more than at the viewpoints on the serpentine itself.

They light this up nicely at night, we had a drink in the square facing it which was nice but nothing overly special, just alright.

The cat museum in Kotor, Montenegro is a little bit of a misnomer. While many would assume it has actual physical cats - it’s really devoted to images of cats in advertising and news. It’s got some really interesting pieces and a lot to look at in it’s few tiny rooms. There’s also a nice gift shop and a couple of very hot and not moving live cats lounging on a table. It’s worth the few dollars to see if you have the time. It is a bit difficult to find, it’s in a courtyard behind the buildings that Google maps directs you to.

The current church was rebuilt following the old Church being destroyed by fire. Externally it is nothing special, but the interior is something else. particularly the enormous pained panels featuring saints, the scale of these has to be seen to be believed.

Nicely lit at night. Annoyingly loud, every hour on the hour. Check your hotel location before booking.

Loved this. Main square of the old town. I walked through it so many times. Loved the architecture, churches and atmosphere. Walk around, explore and then grab a bite to drink or some food at one of the restaurants and enjoy!

We visited this museum as past of a tour with Holland America. This was good as we had skipped it on our tour with Collette Vacations in 2017. This is a nice little museum with ship models, art, clothing and furniture, as well as weapons. It was definitely worth a half hour of our time.

Second church we saw while wondering the streets of Kotor. It has a burned outside look, as well as a pretty door and beautiful simple inside.

One of the access gates in Old town. Quite well preserved. You can climb up on it for a beautiful view of the area. From here, you can continue your route along the crest of the wall, along the seashore. The view is beautiful.

We actually liked the sea gate the best, but this one was no slouch either. Right next to the wall and the tower, its a great way to go in the city!

We passed through the sea gate whilst doing a self-guided walking around the old city area in Kotor on a one day stop in the city on a Thursday in June. The sea gate is not as imposing as some of the other gates in the Kotor City walls in that there are no flanking towers or gatehouse associated with it. However being a small gate in a tall continues wall probably makes it just as defensible.
To the right hand side as you approach, the visitor will find a detailed map of Kotor and we photographed this on a smart phone to help us navigate once inside. Passing through the gateway, the visitor finds themselves in a short tunnel through the city wall which opens out into a small square.
