What travellers are saying
- David DDevon, UK27,658 contributionsSaturday 21st September and we visited the ancient port city of Side on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast.
The remains of this Roman Temple were one of the features of City that we visited during our tour. Known as the Temple of Apollo it was built around 150 A.D., it stands on the seafront alongside the Temple of Athena. The original Temple was dedicated to Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of music, harmony and light.
The five restored columns with the partial pediment, a triangular gable, are a feature of the skyline by the coast. They were restored during the years of 1984 and 1990 with additional restoration in 2017.
As we were walking away from the Temple we stopped and looked back, as per our Guide's instructions, and we could see several carvings of Medusa's head on the gable on top of the pillars.Written 28 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Nowadays it’s very popular for tourists. We took a special train for tourists from the car/bus/dolmus park to the Greek Amphitheater (it’s only 50 cent). We walked among the ancient ruins, it was a journey into the past. It’s worth a visit.Written 27 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - happykoabugHonolulu, HI655 contributionsIt is free to check out these ruins. There is a fee for the amphitheatre. The city build a nice walkway so that you don't get run over by the numerous cars and bus heading toward the harbor. The temple is at the end of the site near the harbor.Written 31 May 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. One of the major features of the ancient City and stopping point on our tour was the remains of this fountain.
It really was a remarkable and impressive sight even in it's current state. We learnt from our Guide the Fountain was once three times the size it is now.
We stood there just imagining how it originally looked, with large ornate archways, curved recesses and countless number of pillars.
The was a metal plaque near by with an etched drawing of the original fountain along with relevant information.Written 10 November 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Original bridge built in Roman times and some of it is still visible. Rebuilt in 13th century by the Selchuks. - laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,427 contributionsWe took a one-day trip to Side and visited the ancient ruins. Through the gate and „Vespasianus Aniti” we saw the huge Greek Amphitheater with 25 000 seats! The ruins can be seen free and it’s worth to walk around and enjoy the special atmosphere of the past. We liked it and took lots of photos!Written 12 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.

- laczkozsuDebrecen, Hungary2,427 contributionsSide is 80kms from Antalya and it’s worth a visit. There are lots of ancient ruins in the towns, so we took a journey into the past. One of the most important ruins the Agora from the Roman times, from 2. Century before Christ. It was the scene of official events and celebrations. I think it’s an interesting place.Written 12 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
- Shirley10112London, UK20 contributionsEverywhere you go around Side there are archaeological sites but watch out for men wearing grey jackets who appear to be there to guide and take photos for you. These are NOT official and I found one man in particular wanted to be closer than I was comfortable with so decided to leave, at which point he held out his hand for money and expected us to pay him 10 lira.Written 8 November 2017This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - K96037 contributionsLots of cigarette ends and rubbish on the sand of our supposedly private hotel beach. Hotel is adult only, but there were families with children on the sunbeds and a lady with a dog on the beds ( dogs not allowed in our hotel) and this did not seem to be monitored. Disappointing as we have stayed many times in various parts of Turkey and have always had beautifully clean beaches.Written 19 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Chris TAppleby Magna, UK55 contributionsThe audio guide is included in the ticket price. The extra for the headphones is literally for a set of earpods, which we only received when leaving the site (regretted paying the extra). The audio tour has 5 stops, most of the info is also on info boards around the site. Impressive building, amazing it survives and worth visiting. Don't bother with the extras though.Written 16 October 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
