We found great results, but some are outside Nagano Prefecture. Showing results in neighbouring cities.
Limit search to Nagano Prefecture.
Nozawa Onsen Nozawaonsen-mura
We were reading about nozawa on the Shinkansen to Nagano and decided to change plans and miss he monkey park and head to this Onsen town.
There can sometimes be a slight sulphurous smell in the air due to the geothermal nature of the town.

Nakasendo Walking Trail, Tsumagojuku Nagiso-machi
Hiking this Historical Trail from Magome to Tsumago was a greatest experience of unspoiled beauty of nature, villages which still preserve Edo Period (between 1603 and 1868 in the history of Japan) buildings, way...
Passing by a small village with its shrine, a water fall, forests, and brooks, this is a delightful nature trail connecting the two charming villages.

Norikura Kogen (Highland) Matsumoto
This park receives less visitors than the neighbouring ones and as such you are more in the wild as you hike the paths.
It was cool to see no convenience stores...just nature and mountains.
Shiga Kogen Ski Area Yamanouchi-machi

Snowboarders will note a lack of park areas (but who cares?) Thousands of school kids .... Everywhere.

Myojin Pond Matsumoto
We sat near the water and just watched nature.
Hakuba Hakuba-mura
Initially we planned to visit Monkey Park, but due to heavy snowfall it was closed and the information centre in Nagano suggested Hakuba as a daytrip for us.
Hakuba 47 is my favorite park but there are lots to explore.
Taisho Pond Matsumoto
There is resthouse for relaxation and having snacks or drinks and buying souvenirs before heading out on trail along the pond up/down to other sites along stream of Kamigochi national park.
Because we took it real slow and took in all the nature offers, we missed out on some of other attractions.
Pond Tashiro Matsumoto
Surrounding by nature (rivers, forest, and mountain), it is a pleasant sight when the leaves started turning in colours.

Okushiga Kogen Ski Area Yamanouchi-machi
Great ski runs, wonderful for kids even for first time young skiiers (forget about Snow Gardens) and late starters like me! Super fun Ski Park with humps and bumps even for the young ones.
Takato Castle Remains Park Ina
The alternative is to take the JR bus (520 yen) to Takato and walk about 15 minutes uphill to the park. Park entrance fee is 500 yen.
I'd have to say though, if you miss the sakura or autumn season this park would just be an ordinary park and the effort to get there won't really be worth it.
