Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had an amazing time at this bar!
My husband and I visited based on a recommendation, and it was truly a wonderful experience. The place is small, just like many places in Japan, creating an intimate and not overly crowded atmosphere, which we really loved.
We connected deeply with the concept and style of the bar.
The service was absolutely incredible! It's clear that the staff puts their heart and soul into everything they do.
The cocktails were beautifully presented, and the flavors were fantastic. We sat at the bar in front of the owner and were really impressed by his dedication to the place. We highly recommend this experience to everyone and will definitely return.

They got the "we are exclusive" or "you got to be in the know" vibe down. There are NO signage to this place. Only a cartoon drawing of a bee. The front door says 'book store' and if you try to peek inside, there is a dark curtain to block any possible glimpse inside.

To stop people queing down the street, they have an app that tells you your place in the que. The wait isn't crazy long. For me, a solo visitor, it took about 15 minutes to get the invite.

It is a very small cocktail bar. Only a couple of tables and the rest are bar seats. It is a nice atmosphere. If I were to complain about anything, the music was a tad loud for my personal taste but it was great lighting and nice vibe.

The cocktails are pretty amazing. Try the Ninjia Smash - it comes with a full show. Complete with dry ice and a spotlight..... and it tastes pretty good too. They also highlight local products including their gin. Kinobi just happens to be our family's favorite gin brand.

I have been visiting a few of these "Best in the World" establishments. I understand why these folks are always in contention.

Great little bar on the 1st (ground) floor with 2 more rooms up above. The barman (Nobu) was really friendly/easy going and made an effort to involve me in the conversation with a regular as I had stopped by on my own.
Good prices and a wide choice of drinks and they have a lot of local beers/gins too. Great location right at the north end of Pontocho.
Well worth checking this place out whether you live in Kyoto or are here on vacation.

Great bar with a large selection of Japanese whisky. The lady & gentleman who served us were excellent - absolutely professional, but also very friendly. This was one of our favourite bars on the trip and we will definitely stop in again on a future visit!

Hands down the best night club in Kyoto. Lived in Kyoto for 4 years for my undergrad and I went to World soooo many times. The music is good (usually plays all genres) and the staff are super friendly and nice. They also get famous artists from around the world for a decent cover charge (I saw Steve Aoki and R3HAB). Would definitely go whenever I come visit Kyoto again. Thank you for all the amazing memories!

I found this bar looking at the reviews and had a great time chatting with owner Kiku who was a lovely host. This bar has a relaxing feel to it coupled with Beatles/Lennon nostalgia. Definitely recommended.

I found this place after visiting a very nice shinto temple in the area : good surprise. Interesting place where I met with japanese and western people as well in a very friendly atmosphere. Some happenings there in theater, music and arts. Ben the owner, a french guy living in Kyoto for 15+ years, is very attentive with customers and can share good advices about the city. On top very good beer from local breveries. Very nice place to spend the evening in Kyoto.

My friends and I stumbled upon this place in search of a restroom on a Friday night – wow was the caliber of this place a pleasant surprise.

Once we came in, we were told that an English-speaking host was on the way. ~10 minutes later a woman came to ask us what we were looking for in a sake (sweet vs dry, flavorful vs crisp, etc). All four of us gave different descriptions, the hostess asked clarifying questions, and then gave us individualized tastings. The selections were all exceptional. If you’re in the area, highly recommend dropping by for ~45 minutes.

I read about this spot from Anthony Bourdain's Japan travel book: Rice, Noodle, Fish and was excited to check out this geisha / geiko bar in the Gion district. We went early enough on a weeknight where we did not need reservations, but I can imagine you would need them on a weekend.

We had to pay a cover charge to get in (1000 yen/person) but we obliged. We actually had a fun experience, since the bar wasn't too crowded yet we were able to have some nice chats with the bartenders where my husband learned about Japanese whiskey and was able to sample quite a few. We also got to learn some Japanese from them which was fun since I'm still trying to learn the language. Even though we didn't see any geishas, we had a fun Kyoto experience sampling Japanese whiskey and talking with the bartenders in this beautiful bar (loved the layout :) )

Gorgeous bar with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails, using local liquors and some herbs that have been foraged. We went early and got a seat at the bar--the space is quite small. It takes a little looking around the building as it's upstairs. Feels peaceful and old-school in the best way. Bartender/owner made our drinks and they were some of the best cocktails I've had. Highly recommend.
