Saw tons of proboscis monkeys and it was a wonderful experience with Mr Ardi 😃 Other animals we spotted were the hornbills! Mr Ardi can be contacted via whatsapp at +60 11-5335 8066

Mr Ardi answered many of our questions about Sepilok fluently in English 😄

Wasn’t expecting much but turned out to be mind blowing! The lives of POWs loss was just so unnecessary. The 265km forced-march started from this camp (now a park), and ended in Ranau. Which is literally our next stop (literally the next day!)

Got my hands on a copy of the book where the historians documented as much of the POWs personal accounts (the surviving 6 of the 2,500) as well as accounts from interrogations of the Japanese war criminals.

MUST visit!! If you’re in a rush like us, we simply had a quick 45mins stop over on our way to Sandakan Airport.

Very basic accommodations. If you expect to be pampered, don't. Shower in the bathroom sprays water everywhere--on the sink, on the toilet, on the floor. Uncomfortable bedding.
That being said, awesome to see a Turtle laying her eggs. Seeing the hatchery and understanding the work they are doing was educational and interesting.

My friend and I just spent 4 days/3 nights in Deramakot Forest Reserve with Adventure Alternative Borneo. Their organization from europe was very easy and they arranged pick up near Kinabatangan and drop off at Sandakan airport. Their guide, Mike, is the best guide i ever had in the multiple years travelling around the world watching wildlife. The food was decent, the room was good without luxury, clean and with hot water.
Our first night was very successful with multiple exciting sightings, the second and third nights were more silent but we had some amazing sightings like an elusive Banteng or a Banded Palm Civet. When we met we told Mike some target animals i always wanted to see and he was always looking for them. He found for us some of the animals i always wanted to see like a Binturong eating fruits in a tree or a slow loris moving slowly down a tree. Our sightings included 3 Leopard Cat, 2 slow loris, binturong; banded civet, island palm civets, malay civet, bornean striped palm civets, banteng, pigmy elephant, buffy fish owl, barred eagle owl, crested serpent eagle, white-bellied rat snake, sunda skunk, 4 orangutan, flying fox, colugo, flying squirrels and others.
Thank you to the team of AABorneo and Mike! Can’t wait to be back!

The whole experience is fantastic. Cabins are large and very comfortable with air conditioning. Water crystal clear. All waste taken off island. Food is excellent without being overcomplicated. Diving would satisfy all but the most demanding or finicky. Staff always smiling and helpful. Turtle hatching and release also part of activities.

While in Sandakan, we dropped in to visit this historical house which the famous author Agnes Keith had stayed. It is interesting to see the house and be able to get a glimpse of life in Sandakan in the early days of Borneo. The English Tea House is just next door and perfect for an afternoon tea and scone after the visit.

This temple sits atop a hill, giving great views all around. The temple itself is quite large, with many statues of Buddha and a very colourful interior. Well worth a visit.

Amazing rainforest and designated are for pitcher plants. We saw a few water monitors in the park. A huge one climbing a tree and a smaller one on the boardwalk. Definitely recommend this quiet park for a peaceful walk in the nature. Two hours is enough for going around the whole walking path. Did not go to the forest paths. Remember to bring your bug spray, sunhat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

We went to Sandakan in December 2023. We live in Redondo Beach in Southern California and this was a wonderful trip to visit KL, Singapore, Langhawi and Borneo. We initially had planned just to stay in Kota Kinabalu but then our son really wanted to see the Orangutan Rehabilitation in Center. As such we made a spur of the moment decision to fly off to Sandakan on Air Asia.

Not having planned this part of our trip in advance I looked to trip advisor and found a few reviews of Tour Guide Chris Tan Wee Tong. I literally called him from the airport in Kota Kinabalu and asked him if he would be willing to give us a guided tour/transportation while in Sandakan. Fortunately, he was available on the day we were arriving.

As promised Chris was waiting for us at the airport in his brand new car and already had our day completely planned out for us. He took us to see the Proboscis monkeys, Sun Bears and Orangutan exhibit. He also took us to the local mosque of the area so that we could participate in our Friday prayers.

The Orangutan centre was truly amazing. You have to plan your journey as to the feeding times. I believe we went for the 2 pm one. The orangutans are highly intelligent and started to show up at about 1:45 pm even though the food had not been put out for them as yet. The rainforest was beautiful as were the animals. As a former Biology major it was a blessing to see these majestic animals in their native environment.

Chris was the ultimate professional and responsible guide. He really went out of his way to give us his unique view of his beloved Sandakan and its people and culture. Being a former police office we felt completely safe with him as he imparted his knowledge and love of his land. He even went so far as to arrange our transportation back in Kota Kinabalu and arranged for a wonderful driver there as well.

We most definitely plan to return to Sandakan and highly recommend Chris to all travelers. He can be reached on WhatsApp at +60168376629

The church was initiated by Rev. W.H. Elton in 1888 and the construction was completed in 1906. It is the oldest stone church in Sabah. It was designed by New Zealander Mr. B.W. Mountfort who designed the church based on Christchurch Cathedral in New Zealand, which was badly damaged in the 2011 earthquake. The church was built with stone, with mix of ironwood timber and quite rare to see stone church in Malaysia. The building is well kept and very calm and peaceful when sitting inside the church.
