Yurimaguas definitely has it’s charme.. especially as the last city connected to the street. The atmosphere is relaxed and people are friendly. Definitely recommended to travel to Iquitos onboard on one of the cargo boats from the company Eduardo in hammock. Around the plaza or at the port you can find good hammocks for different budgets with different lifetimes. Would travel again by cargo boat.

We had a great time with our guides Josúe and Pakita. They were super knowledgeable and had great communication, so the language barrier was not an issue at all. We saw dolphins, sloths, monkeys, otters and crocodiles. Our guides were skilled in mimicking animal noises to grab their attention and come the the river’s edge. We did a lot of fishing under their guidance and were able to catch some fish which we ended up cooked for dinner (delicious). We were able to relax after each day and played cards and read our books. It felt like a really authentic experience as we hardly saw any other tourists for the entire 6 days. We got along really well with Josúe and Pakita, and even went out for dinner with them and their family when we returned to Lagunas. Highly recommend to anyone thinking about visiting the Amazon - such a great experience. Thanks again to Miguel, Josúe and Pakita!

There are lots of nice places to eat in Yurimaguas, and this is one of the best. The chicharrones here are so good! And the ceviche was beautiful - the leche de tigre- YUM! A yummy place for lunch.

We started our trip to the Amazon in Tarapoto which we were expecting to be more "jungle like" but in fact it was just a busy city, a good place to visit for one night.
So luckily we were recommend to go and see Winston in Yurimaguas by the owner of Home Yuntawasi Backpackers in Tarapoto for a real Amazon adventure!
And so it was, Winston is absolutely brilliant. He arranged all of our transport to and from Tarapoto and when we got to his hostel (which is lovely) and located on the river, he explained what will happen the next day, from getting the boat to Lagunas, everything that we could expect on the tour and supplied all of our meals, water, fruit and snacks for the 4 day canoe trip.
The tour itself was honestly breathtaking!
We were amazed at everything we saw; sloths, monkeys, Dolphins, parrots, toucans, Eagles, Guinea pigs, possums, turtles, otters, frogs, bats, crocodiles, tarantulas, crabs and a snake!
We even got to do a night tour where we saw the amazons nightlife at its best, caught our own fish with spears and one of our guides even got a turtle and a giant snail for us to hold.
The food we ate was so tasty! The guides cooked our every meal breakfast, lunch and dinner. We ate a lot of fish which made it more exciting, as when you or (well our guides were much better at fishing) caught fish that would be added to your next meal!
This has been to the highlight of our trip so far and we thank Winston and his family for making us so welcome and both of our knowledgable guides for looking after us all so well on our beautiful tour of the Amazon.
