There's a great walking path along the edge of the rims and you can park just east of the roundabout where it begins, or a half mile further east at the paved parking area.
There are trails along the Rims and parks as well.

So there is a park element to the zoo, but even the best big city zoos have fantastic gardens, picnic areas and playgrounds for the kids.
The zoo is also a botanical garden/park with paved trails, well marked attractions and real natural habitat for the animals.
