Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What travellers are saying
- Siobhan BBelfast, UK93 contributionsI watched a video on TikTok which made it seen like it was a lot bigger & more corridors than there is, it is still a nice wee day out though.
We got the train from Sittingbourne to Margate (Grotto is walkable from station), we got a taxi that cost just under ÂŁ8. Didn't notice signs so you might have to keep an eye open, because when the taxi stopped I wondered why.
If taking a backpack just know you aren't allowed to take it down into the grotto, they worry that you might knock shells off the walls as it is a tight fit when walking past people. You leave it at the desk & they give you a tag, which you return to get your bag back. In all you could get it done in 5 minutes, but you are just so amazed by the detail & time it would have took to do it you do spend more time down there. Especially if you are looking for the designs, I stood for a good few minutes trying to see the tree of life.
Wear suitable shoes for the ground is uneven, & you might want a coat if you feel the cold more.
The shop have loads of shells for sale, also cards, tea towels, soap & crystal / birthstones.Written 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - fredpRednal, UK146 contributionsGood, clean seaside fun on a beautiful and safe beach. Well kept and lots of traditional seaside attractions on the promenade.
Easily accessible from the railway station for a day trip.Written 7 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It's small and open plan.
With all the heritage these brands have you would have thought a large attraction drawing in visitors from all over the world would be possible. It could be tied in with the real locomotives stored on site by a 3rd party (and inaccessible)
My advice is if your local definitely go but don't make a day trip of it.
Hornby please do something more ambitious, your public would love you for it.....Written 13 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Eagle-eyed viewers of Location, Location, Location might even spot a property featured on a recent programme.Written 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - MarchWeekenderPortsmouth, UK168 contributionsI enjoyed our visit to the gallery and exhibition by Ed Clark however I felt the building lacks atmosphere and its content was sparse for such a big space. On the plus easy access on the seafront and great facilities. Deck chairs outside a nice touch and the view of the bay from the steps is amazingWritten 30 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - kasey38 contributionshighlight of our day trip to margate! went in with low expectations as we didn’t know what it would be like but were very pleasantly surprised! displays are informative and funny (especially if you like crab puns). gift shop items were so unique which i loved. the staff were so friendly and answered and encouraged questions about the exhibit and crabs in general. you can tell the staff are really passionate about it which is lovelyWritten 26 August 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - SteadySCorpusty, UK125 contributionsGreat tidal pool, allegedly the largest in the UK ? Good parking nearby and easy access. Arrived just as the tide was starting to come over the top which was an amazing experience, like an infinity pool in reverse. Easier to walk around the sides and down one of the ladders, wading in was a bit tricky due to the uneven and weedy access. Suggest you check tide times before visiting as we sat afterwards as the tide came in completely and watched the ladders and pool sides completely disappear.Written 16 July 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. It needs some updating but so much potential. The upstairs was closed due to a leaking roof. Hope to revisit when it’s repaired.Written 2 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - tim rMargate, UK11,240 contributionsA very busy Harbour Arm today, as it is a very hot Sunday.
Two pubs were busy, as were the various small food vendors popped up amongst the old fishing huts.
Toilets available, and a walkway around the top, filled with both tourists and people casting their fishing lines.Written 18 July 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
