Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon for a quick drink. Great choice of beers, gin and cocktails. Free bar snacks if we’d gone a bit later. Friendly staff. Really lovely place. Highly recommended.

Called in as a party of six and were made very welcome by both staff and other drinkers. A very comprehensive selection of real ale and beers on offer with an absolutely superb pork pie too. It’s a small location but very popular and it is easy to see why.

Visited Saturday 16th July for drinks before and after a football game.
The Dove is a very clean, tidy and friendly traditional pub.
We were made very welcome despite not being locals, the 3 people running it were so friendly and had a very good rapport with all the customers. The beer is very good, I tried the Old Mill bitter, very nice.
The only downside was as they didn’t expect a large crowd there were no homemade pies available, but we’ll get to sample them one day.
All in all a great pub, highly recommended if you’re travelling for the football or just passing. PS on street parking on the side roads opposite the Dove.

Based purely on food this by far is the best value of anywhere in the uk. £3 for pork pie peas n gravy and a proper serving only loses out to the fish finger sandwich as that is bloody delicious. Pints are also cheap as .. but show me a better place for value for money in the food department and I will show you a unicorn!!!

Hoyland is a little market town south of Barnsley.Like most of the area it has seen brighter days. But tucked away on its narrow one way system is the Micro bar The Knave and Kestrel.
Named loosely on the Book by local author Barry Hines which was turned into the film Kes by Ken Loach.
The knave and Kestrel offers a good range of ales ciders and gins and a warm welcome by its friendly and knowledgeable staff. Don't let yourself be worried by visiting alone as the regulars are a friendly bunch who will readily engage you in conversation or leave you be if you like . There is a games room up stairs and a back room if you like it cosy. The added bonus is that it is literally at the side of a take away and is on a bus route between Barnsley and Rotherham it's a ten minute walk to Elsecar train station from where Sheffield and Wakefield can be reached. The knave and Kestrel is well worth taking the trouble to find and visit .CHEERS!!

Only visited once, for a drink during a pub crawl, but wish we could have stayed longer. Lovely atmosphere, great selection of beer and friendly staff. Live music was great, and the whole place was just buzzing. Will certainly go back!

This pub has just had a month closed for refurbishment & now looks lovely. Not the cheapest drinks in town but still not too bad. I like how away fans arnt allowed to enter on match days so dont get any trouble. Love the music when Neil the djs on. He gets every one in a good mood. 4 stars instead of 5 comes down to toilets not being refirbed & they need a bit of tlc. I think this is a well run pub with friendly staff

14 of us all went for food here and everything that appeared on the table looked great. The children were given colouring things to keep them entertained and everybody enjoyed their meal. There was just 1 starter that was forgot about but other than that the food all came out together. Staff are lovely and friendly.

Beautiful little jewel in the crown of this quintessentially English Country Village.

Idyllic, peaceful country club, open to non-members (just sign in) with an excellent selection of beers, wines, spirits and fizz! All at very competitive prices.

Lovely atmosphere. Great specious beer garden. Kids and dogs welcome.

    Well worth a visit.

Visited this evening with family for a drink and can't fault the atmosphere and lovely staff. Could do with some care taken behind bar.... no house whisky to add to a mixer (only had scottish malts) and the dark rum was not the best (try captain morgans). Good range of beer however and a welcome shelter from the thunderstorm.
