Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

- gary aTaunton, UK7 contributionsI was fortunate to go to the Highwayman Inn for my birthday lunch.
Booking is advised and this was done by email back and forth culminating with a request to enter the car park just after the inn through the giant red shoes.
On the day as we approached the Inn from the outside things looked far from usual. Externally there are so many odd looking quirks to see and comprehend. You enter the Inn via the coach door. Then as your eyes adjust to the darkness they are treated to a full on assault from all the unbelievable contents on display. Are you in a ship, or dark cave, or a comfy spot with a skeleton, or resting your drink on a set of huge bellows. Every corner contains some sort of delight to think why, what, how. Also you appreciate the seating areas are secondary to the vast selection of contents.
The menu offers usual, and vegan food. From pub standards to local fish of the day. As birthday boy I went for a steak pie, chips with peas together with a celebratory candle in the pie. The restaurant attendees sang the usual few bars of that song. Meanwhile my wife had received her chosen Scampi (not the usual faire these were plump plus in a seeded crumb). To follow chocky cake with ice cream. Price wise this was all good value all served hot and fresh.
I notice some have complained about the menu and food here. These folk I believe have not taken in the full extent of these fantastic surroundings. These are so different it’s hard to explain. You really need to experience them for yourselves. One limitation they do bring is a lack of circulation space making complex dishes needing multiple trips or large trays to the table an impossibility.
So get the diary out and plan a date to experience this Inn which may well be the most “Unique Inn in England”Written 6 September 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Extremely helpful gentleman who briefed us thoroughly on the granite way and quickly resolved a minor issue with the gents bike. Great trip to Lydford where we had a light lunch at the National Trust café. Weather not great but to whizz along on these great bikes was lots of fun. Thank you, a great day out. Very highly recommended but book ahead if you want the e-bikes as they only have 2 but I understand they are in the process of getting more.Written 22 October 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Lauren R3 contributionsWhat an amazing adventure! We met up with Keith and Jackie not really knowing what to expect and I can tell you we were far from disappointed! Keith was so helpful during booking to ensure we had the right route for our group (kids 9,11,12 and 15). The gorge walking was a lot of fun, water clean and the scenery beautiful. Keith shared so much knowledge about the route and gave the best advice to ensure we were all having fun.
Be prepared to get wet and you will fall in but it’s honestly worth it!
The whole experience felt very safe and controlled so I didn’t feel worried as the kids jumped off rocks! Would 10/10 recommend!Written 7 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
