Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What an amazing site, not to be missed! Make sure you book in advance (we were super grateful that they were able to squeeze us in to an afternoon tour slot) because Maeshowe is a truly magical experience. Our guide Tina gave an excellent tour and the whole experience was very well organised. Perhaps the exhibition could do with some more displays and panels to enhance the visit, but for £10 a ticket we were really happy with our visit.

We joined one of the free daily tours run by the Historic Environment Scotland Rangers. Our ranger (Eileen) was fantastic, sharing so much history about the stones and the Neolthic settlement of the nearby Barnhouse. Strongly recommend I learnt so much!

We noticed the sign on the side of the road and almost drove by. We turned around and went to look. Like everything else we’ve visited here, the cairn was in excellent condition and well maintained. The signage gave great explanations of what we were seeing. And you can actually go inside. So interesting. Make sure you stop.

What a lovely, serene & tranquil wooded area in the heart of Orkney.
You can miss the entrance to the car park as not sign posted & car park is small so park with consideration.
Lovely sign boards have been placed to advise of the story. Follow the clear paths through a mixed woodland (unique in Orkney) & along the tranquil stream with waterfalls & arches. Take time to stop, look & listen at the Stone benches & seats then follow the paths out at either end to work through shrub & grassland.
It's amazing to visit in spring early summer when the woodland floor is carpeted in flowers

Although this is, as the name implies, a very small place it is packed with such wonderful goodies that it is a destination venue for textile lovers. There is all manner of wool and silk both in yarn and roving form and all dyed in the most glorious colours. It caters to all tastes: soft, subtle, rich, bright, light - it's all there.
Pam, the dyer, has been experimenting with dyeing fabric (with wonderful results) and hopes to have some in the shop next year.
In common with most orkney attractions it is closed for the winter. This year is has been open from April to the end of September.

We have just returned from a visit to Orkney that was made excellent by Patricia's thoughtful and knowledgeable planning and guiding. She contacted us in advance to suggest some places to visit and then tailored a 3 day programme in response to our interests and priorities. It was luxury to be driven round listening to fascinating insights into both Orkney history and life today and then stopping at key destinations for a visit with an interesting overview and all questions answered.

Even as we travelled, if Patricia learnt that we had a particular interest , it was quickly incorporated into our programme. Cafes for lunch had been pre-booked and food was high quality.

Patricia is friendly and enthusiastic with a great sense of humour and seems to know just about everyone and everything in Orkney. I'm sure that you couldn't find a kinder or more interesting guide.

Having travelled to many places of ancient interest in the British Isles, we were astounded at what Orkney has to offer in terms of its rich history and we especially loved the Neolithic sites. It’s a beautiful and captivating island and our decision to spend the day with Anna was definitely worth it. She’s a charming and knowledgeable guide and our travel from site to site was smooth and timed just right for each place visited. Thank-you so much for such a memorable day. Highly recommended 🙂
