We had an amazing visit to watch the hatchlings last night (March 3). I booked a few weeks ago, so I was allocated to group 4. Those who book as soon as the tickets are released in September will be allocated the earlier groups, and those that leave it too late like me will go into the last groups. You only know which group you are in when you check-in at the centre. I set my family up with low expectations since we booked late, it was later in the season, and we can never predict nature. However when we arrived at the centre at 6.30 we were told group 1 and 2 had already left to see hatchlings as there was quite a lot of activity on the beach! Group 3 left sometime after 7. And group 4 was called to the beach at around 8.30pm.

The centre itself is new and has a small cafe, gift shop and an interactive experience for kids to learn about turtles and watch some short documentary films about mon repos. The area they show the films in is air-conditioned so a fair few people just sat in there waiting. The cafe serves hot drinks and food until 8.30 or 9, and then afterwards it serves cold drinks and food. The staff give a short presentation at 7.30 to prepare you for the hatching or laying, however if you leave before 7.30 you may miss these details.

When it's your groups time to go watch some hatchlings (if you are lucky enough there are some that night) they will call out the group and you walk down to the beach in the darkness. It is practically pitch black so I recommend bringing a small torch or headlamp. Once you reach the beach you aren't allowed to continue using the torches.

Our group was extremely lucky, we were the last group and saw a clutch of 66 hatchlings emerge. The staff wait for them all to emerge and then choose a few to show to the group - and this is the only time you can take a photo/video. You are then asked to form two lines down to the beach, some people are asked to stand in the middle with torches to guide the turtles down to the water (I highly recommend bringing a small torch or headlamp so that you can participate in this part!). The hatchlings are then released and they quickly run down following the light until they hit the water.

At the end of this, some of the group were about to leave, and some were going to stay to watch a nest being dug up - but another clutch of hatchlings started to emerge so we were given the opportunity to watch about 96 more hatchlings emerge and lead them to the water! We then stayed to watch an old nest being dug up (to count how many eggs had hatched, and see if there were any survivors) and about 20+ were still alive so we also helped release those as well. We ended the night there and were so grateful to have seen over 150 loggerhead hatchlings! The rangers and all staff were really friendly and informative.

Top tips: #1 Bug spray yourself before you head to the beach! If it's not too hot maybe even wear pants/long sleeves. We have so many enormous itchy bites. #2 Bring a small torch. #3 Bring things to entertain yourself during the wait - my phone reception was awful there and the wifi wasn't good. #4 Lower your expectations, it all depends on nature so you may not see any hatchlings/nesting.

Family friendly. Safe playing area for children. Stunning views. Coffee nearby. Well worth a visit and a good place for the kids to let off some steam.

We went there most days in the 2 weeks we spent at Bargara every year for more than 30 years and found it was a safe swimming spot for the kids, while they were finding their feet, so to speak.

Beautiful spot and a great place to dive, if like me however, you encounter a curious sea snake, I'll never go back there again. I HATE snakes........

We stayed 3 nights. It was nice. Tight slab sites but plenty to choose from if you book early. Helpful staff. Beach east walk over the park. It was nice. A bit if a sleepy grey nomad vibe but that’s winter I guess.

Highly recommend this tour - we did the Eco Turtle Day Tour that went for 2 hours during the morning. Lots of great sights and also lots of great information from Matt. We were all brand new to riding segways and they were easy to use and get the hang of!!!

Helpful and friendly owners who can't do enough for you. Their produce is excellent especially their pineapple and chilli sauce which won second at the Sydney Royal Easter Show this year. Their jams are to die for. We will be going back again next time.

My three teenagers and I had a great time learning the basics of surfing from Daren and Abbie. The instructors were friendly, informative, patient, and encouraging. The waves were small the morning we booked, but that turned out to be perfect for our first time surfing. We had a choice of a surfboard or a stand-up paddleboard (which is much more stable, thus easier when you are just learning!). We learned the basics of paddling the board, popping up, and catching a wave. It was so much fun that one of the kids said "I wish we could keep doing this all day!".
