Great place to go for strolls. One can walk from one gate to the one on the other sides within 10 minutes, but it's worthwhile to get lost wandering through the different alleys, seeing the churches, and then climbing up to walk the city's walls. There were a lot of partiers late at night and cruise-ship people crowd the city in the day, so it's best to stay over and find off-hours to explore in more peace. The seafood is the city is the freshest you may ever have. The bay is just outside the gate and is lovely!

This is spectacular geography. We were lucky to see it from our cruise ship as we sailed away on a sunny day. Another good observation point is up on the hills surrounding the Bay, and you can hire a cab for that.

I went in October at the end of the season. It’s quite a small old town, much smaller than many of the others I have been to. The streets are about 2 m wide. Although quiet in October this place will be rammed in high season. Well worth a visit, good for half a day (although not mentioned this will be a pickpockets paradise in high season).

We had an optional tour to Montenegro and a first stop was the beautiful small Island.
We took a ferry which travels across a rather stormy sea on a Sunday raining morning. The bumpy ride adds some poignancy to the passage of time as locals similarly rode this path for prayers.
Before approaching we can see a navigation light at the northern end of the islet. We reached quite early around 9:50am and was not crowded. The Local guide told us that in busy summer the crowd can reach up to thousands of visitors but this rainy morning it was only about 30 of us!
The Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks (Montenegrin: Госпа од Шкрпјела) is the largest building on the small islet, the church was originally a small chapel, then a baroque Roman Catholic church.
There was the impressive Prayer Hall with wonderful oil paintings and even overhead, and there’s the marvelous altar. We were explained that the pictures in the lower row tell about the lives of the Saints from the Old Testament and in the upper row they depict the life of the Mother of God. We understand that the organ is 300 years old and the church is still active as weddings, baptisms and masses are held there.
There is a museum attached to it and also a small gift shop close to the church. The museum segment of the church contains 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century baroque artist from Perast. His most important painting is The Death of the Virgin. There are also paintings by Italian artists, and an icon (circa 1452) of Our Lady of the Rocks, by Lovro Dobričević of Kotor.[4]
We spent more than 0.5 hr here and reluctantly took the ferry back. On the way back it was all calm and as we looked back the view is like framed up with the backdrop of mountain and the clear blue waters. Like floating on the water surface the church is definitely fast becoming one of Montenegro’s most photographed landmarks.

Approaching Kotar Old Town we can already see the City wall zig zag up the mountains of St John.
The Local Guide told us they are about 5 km long, 20, high, and approx 10 m wide. Almost completely preserved they are an excellent example of the fortification architecture in Europe up to the Medieval period.
Kotor walls are a beautiful viewing platform to enjoy the great Old Town scape. We were also told that there are different areas & parts of the city walls; some at lower level helps surround/protect the flat area of Kotor. The remaining goes up to the mountains till the fortress and looks magnificent from here.
It costs 15 euros to walk (free for young kids) the Wall but unfortunately our trip does not include this. Our F&E time are spending more on the Old Town. Still it is amazing sight for us already

I highly suggest visiting in November or at the start of March during a rainy period - in that case, you can see various streams and currents running through the cave - giving the idea of how various stalactites and stalagmites were formed over the years.

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone could help? Myself and my partner are travelling to Montenegro next week and one of the things we are most excited to do is visit Lake Skadar. We will have a rental car and we’re looking please, for suggestions on the best places to stop around Lake Skadar. We are keen to book the kayaks, maybe see some nice beach areas and possibly waterfalls, but just open to tips!!! Thanks so much :)

I will start this review by saying the trains were cancelled the day I decided to go. I'd coached it to Podgorica from Kotor at something like 5am, only to discover there was a rail replacement bus that only went half the way to the monastery. Using my very rudimentary Montenegrin, I managed to discover there was a "taxi driver" aboard the bus who could take me the rest of the way for 5 euros (I use quotation marks as it was an unmarked car).

Once I finally got there I was told I had to cover my legs with an apron-like skirt which they provided (my fault really, I didn't pack any trousers for a Balkan trip that involved stops at several mosques and Orthodox churches). I decided to take my time walking around and soaking it in to make up for the faff involved in getting there, and there was more than enough to soak in. I'm not religious but am fascinated by religious history and architecture, and felt quite emotional at points.

The journey back was even more difficult as I had to find a taxi driver to take me back, only I didn't know where to get the bus from. The guy drove me to a portion of the motorway, gestured that I should flag down the next available bus and then drove off. I then waited about 90 minutes on a little concrete bank flapping my arm at every bus that passed (even the ones I could see weren't going where I wanted to go). Thankfully there was a sweet older guy on the other side of the motorway who had broken down and was looking out for buses to warn me about, and eventually I got on a bus back to Podgorica.

I mention the travel woes here to state that even in spite of the difficulty in accessing the monastery, it was still a five-star experience.

Lovcen park is a place I visited many times, but I have not been there in the last 6 years. Now there are excellent roads that allow the visitors easy access to the park and it's main attractions.

    Must visit. Little Monaco.
Wonderful place for a family visit. Very good location enables you to visit Boka Kotorski bay (2 hours trip with a car) or to go skiing at the same time, 3 hours by car to Kolasin.

Stunning lake with impressive mountains in the small town of Žabljak in Durmitor National Park. We went there by public transport: a bus from Podgorica that takes you to the town of Žabljak. From there, Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is easy to visit on foot within 10-15 minutes from the town center.
If you are not using a car, don’t worry, besides the lake you can also go on foot to Ćurevac viewpoint, to see the largest canyon of Europe: Google maps shows a hiking route of around 2h30mins which you can do, it departs from Žabljak center and follows the road, so you just need to follow the road all the way up to the peak.
It’s a good hiking route and easy-medium level, but REMEMBER to buy a SIM card or e-SIM in order to have internet connection just in case. IMPORTANT as well: bring some cash with you as cards don’t work well due to the lack of signal in the mountains.

Tara canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world (behind the Grand Canyon). There are viewpoints either reached by car or on foot around the canyon. The two popular activities are zip line or rafting (all based at Tara bridge). There are a few zip line companies boasting either the longest/fastest etc. From the Tara bridge you can watch them all and make your own mind up which to try! Typical costs are 35 euro per person. The water levels in the canyon vary over the year, changing the rafting experience. Water levels are lower in the summer so think ‘lazy river’. In the summer the rafting trip includes visiting a waterfall as well as jumping off rocks (not sure if these are possible when the water levels are up). Doesn’t really matter which company you choose as they all start and finish in the same locations. Typical price 60 euros per person and lasts for 2.5hrs (including keep transfer back to the bridge.)
