The ruins of Ancient Thera are on top of hill that can be reached by car on a zig zag path. It is pretty close to the airport too. I had gone there early in the morning and there were no other and the drive on the zig zag path was safer.

You can park at the top half of the hill around a circle and then climb up a steep road to the entrance gate. The entry was 3 Euros and from there is a series of steps and rubble path to get you to the top of the hill where the ruins are. Since, I am not in the best of shape, I had to stop several times and catch my breath. I took me 25 minutes to get to the top. It was pretty windy up there.

The sights of the airport, the black beaches and the countryside was amazing. The ruins are also in amazing order. You get to see a whole Garrison town and its plan. There was no one when I was there. You are restricted to paths around the town by ropes. You get to see a lot of structures that constituted perhaps a Roman Garrison and I imagine it was an amazing town in the ancient times. The people of ancient must have been great hikers to live right at the top without automobiles and mechanical devices. Great experience at the site. Go early in the day as it can get hot and difficult to hike. There was no drinking water facilities or toilets as far I can remember.

Great location, and plenty to see and do even in late October. Taverna's still open, mostly , and a lot of shops still open. Some places saying they will be open throughout the winter.
Kamari tours do a tremendous day trip to the volcano, Thirasia, and then sunset in Oia.
I wasn't personally impressed with the Instagram capital of the world, to crowded and extremely boring. Obviously the blue domed and views are something to see.....but that's it. Over priced and over hyped.
Kamari beach area, far better, with lovely people, food, and far more relaxing.
