What travellers are saying
- Andy FDevizes, UK1,240 contributionsThis is quite an incredible place if you've done your research and know how it was built. Looks like nothing at first until you realise that the Zapotecs basically sliced the top off a mountain to make a flat platform many acres big. On this flat space they built a games court, market place, several huge stepped platforms. It was vast, very dry & hot, with no shade. Over half what we saw was reconstruction rather than actual original excavation (and they’re still at it!). Saw the “dancing” figures carved on several huge stones – but they’re actually pictures of mutilated human sacrifice victims. Very impressive. Near the entrance is a small museum with a few artefacts – far from impressive.Written 16 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Suzanne WHouston, TX160 contributionsOur group of two couples thoroughly enjoyed our loop hike around the calcium waterfalls and pools. The trail was fairly well marked. Bring plenty of water as the up hill either going either way is a challenge. We took a ton of pretty photos. The facilities are good. And we were super impressed with the medical staff who raced down the hill with a stretcher when one of my group passed out near the pools. They carried her to the top, checked her heart rate, blood pressure and temperature, and gave her liquids.Written 4 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - TravellingdocLondon, UK5,626 contributionsCertainly a very local feel to this
Place.
A good time filler when in the town centre.
Had multiple sections from food/ stalls at the far end to flowers, clothes, fresh meat and fresh veg.
There is also a section for souvenirs and even toilets if required.
Some mural art but limited amounts.
Nice for a look around.Written 27 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Myrna SingerCarrollton, TX12 contributionsThis street connects the Zocalo to the Templo Santo Domingo. It is all foot traffic so great place to walk w/o fear of cars. It is also lined with some shops, restaurants and galleries. On Saturday, it was one parade, after wedding party and so on. There are some roof top bars over looking the Templo which is great to watch the wedding partiers.Written 2 December 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ksufan88Wichita, KS5,459 contributionsI saw this museum listed as one of the top attractions in Oaxaca on TripAdvisor, but was concerned that several recent reviews had listed it as closed. I can attest that it is open 10am - 3pm Wednesday - Monday and closed on Tuesdays. It is free which is a great deal for such a nice display of pre-Columbian art. The rooms are brightly lit and the display cases are painted with bright colors that really showcase the ancient pottery and other items.Written 25 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Gus ECerritos, CA8 contributionsThis lovely garden behind the temple of Santo Domingo was great to come and check out.
For starters, you are only able to see the garden IF YOU DO A TOUR. This is important information because you can’t just walk in and start looking around. Lucky for me I showed up exactly as they were gonna start a tour at 5 pm and got to see the tour for only 5$. It was a great time.
The tour guides take you around to different sections of the garden and show you the many plant species they have in the area. She mentioned there is something like over 950 species of plants but they’re aiming to have over 1300. It is very impressive and I loved getting to be in that environment for a bit, even if it was just for an hour.Written 14 March 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - jaizeeSan Francisco, CA137 contributionsCute museum that is free to enter, well maintained and has some interesting exhibits. Most of all it feels like a little moment of respite in the city. There is a coffee shop in the pleasant courtyard, a nice swing and fun little chairs that entertained my children for a while. Definitely check it out!Written 1 January 2024This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Tripadvisor performs checks on reviews.
